October was a whirlwind around here and I can feel December craziness looming in the near distant future. So I am taking this “calm before the storm” window to get myself ready for the upcoming holidays. Before any holiday decorations can come out- I have declared it MISSION: PRE-HOLIDAY DECLUTTER around here.
By now you know I love a good trick for motivating myself to get organized. Last winter I did the Operation: USE IT UP and this summer I shared my 20-Item-Closet-Edit-Trick. Even the entire “20 Minute Organizing” series is a “trick” by keeping it bite sized in 20 minute increments so I don’t feel overwhelmed and paralyzed when it comes to getting organized.
So what’s my current trick for getting the house decluttered before the holidays? Hint: it has to do with Amazon boxes!

If you are like me, you have deliveries arriving all the time. Instead of breaking them down and putting them in the recycle bin, I am using the shipping boxes as containers to fill up with things to donate! It has become a game and is super motivating!
I just put an empty box out on the kitchen counter and whenever I have a spare minute I go through cabinets, drawers and closets and find things to fill it up with. When the box is full I stack it out in the garage. So now instead of feeling overwhelmed with shipments as they arrive- I am almost giddy to have a new box to fill up with stuff to donate.
I now have a whole stack of boxes to donate and can’t wait to unload them. Feels great to have lots of “stuff” out the house before the holidays!
xoxo-
Heather

The 20 minute declutter is a great idea. It’s something you can sweep through and do a few times a week to keep on top of mess… Of course, I tend to even put that off. Maybe I should it put it on my calendar… Like every Sat morning, 20 minute declutter 🙂
