Southern State of Mind Blog by Heather

Campaigning for Neutral Campaign Furniture

in Inspiration on 02/25/13

I love the use of bold statement colors on the campaign furniture out in the blogosphere. I think EVERYONE has seen this gem by now, featured in Lonny magazine.
And then Emily Clark gave us this eye candy in her home office redo
Imagine my hysteria excitement when I stumbled across a couple campaign beauties at my local Goodwill a couple years ago…maybe even sending texts to my friend while throwing myself standing guard to buy them. I jumped right on the bold color bandwagon and painted them a dark aqua to begin- Benjamin Moore Galapagos Blue.

Campaign Furniture BEFORE shots:

Hard to see here, but they are on either side of the bed in the guest room acting as nightstands

The taller one had a pretty bad paint job since I was rushed to have it done before a party. I didn’t even bother to put all of the hardware back on since I had big plans to add more coats of paint. However, once it was parked in the bedroom, I never bothered with it again.  I am pretty sure not having the hardware on is a sin when it comes to campaign furniture. Perhaps as bad as having a jewelry box full of Tiffany jewelrey and not wearing it.

Here is the shorter 3-drawer one mid-way through the guest room re-do.
Bad photo- but you get the idea!
These beautiful dressers, with all that gold “jewelry” were still just waiting to be used to their true beauty.

Like many campaigns, their promises fell short. Literally…the shorter one sat on the left side of the bed- where you couldn’t even see it’s beauty! Imagine all of that beautiful hardware going to waste? But perhaps the biggest fail was that the drawers were empty. What, what? I had 8 perfectly good drawers sitting in the room with no storage purpose?!?

As much as I loved the bold statement pieces, this state of mind was ready for a more neutral approach to campaign furniture.
A couple coats of a neutral creamy white (gotta love a gallon of neutral oops paint) and now the furniture is in harmony with the room. With a little gold spraypaint, the hardware is gleaming. It lives in the family room and serves as my craft and wrapping corral. Ah, 5 drawers filled with arts-and-craft-odds-and-ends for a one-stop-shop when I am feeling crafty or need to wrap a present.

I used the same creamy white paint on the smaller 3-drawer nighstand in the guest room. This allows the navy accent wall to provide the bold backdrop. After attempting a Brasso cleaning, the hardware got a light dusting of metallic gold spray paint.

Ah, in a much better state of mind now.

Nice job. I like the neutral paint colors. Your bedroom looks great in the last two photos. Oh, I can't forget to mention how much I like your craft corral. How lucky to find 2 campaign dressers! I am visiting from Miss MustardSeed.
