{Organization} DIY Hanger Hamper

in Organize on 01/16/17

Hi friends! Today I am sharing a simple organization tip. If you use a dry cleaner often, you will definitely want to read on about how to make your own Hanger Hamper. If you don’t, that’s ok because inspiration can strike anywhere and you just might be inspired to make a small change too. Also, be sure to stick around because I have joined a group of super awesome friends sharing their organization tips linked below.  I know I can use all the help I can get so can’t wait to see their tips and tricks.

You know those little teeny tiny things that just make you CRAZY? Something so small that it isn’t worth making a big deal about but that pretty much makes you want to scream.

For me? Dry Cleaner Hangers.

See, I told you it was a small thing.

We are big dry cleaners around here. My husband wears a golf shirt or button down to work every day and we dry clean both. So that means he is going through at least 5 wire dry cleaner hangers every. single week.

Do you know where they end up? A jumbled mess in our tiny trash can in the master bedroom. Not only did this IRK me because does this mean my family really believes there is a trash can fairy that magically empties them but also because HELLO EARTH I LOVE YOU.

With my monthly mantra attitude in check I decided to “TAKE CHARGE” and do-something-about-it-already.  So I figured out a way to corral wire hangers so that we can take them back to our dry cleaners to be recycled. It’s a win-win! The household trash can fairy will no longer fight wire hangers and Mother Earth will thank me.

Now, I didn’t even know these things existed but there are actually Hanger Hampers. These are contraptions that do just what I was looking for – corral hangers.  These doo-dads are not expensive but since I am trying to not spend money, I figured I could make something similar.  And today I am going to share how I did this.

DIY Hanger Hamper Tutorial

DIY HANGER HAMPER TUTORIAL

TOOLS & MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THIS DIY HANGER HAMPER PROJECT:

  • Random cardboard box to your liking (that will fit hangers)
  • Scissors
  • Shipping Tape
  • Duck Tape (optional)
  • A jumbled mess of wire hangers

STEPS TO FOLLOW FOR THIS DIY HANGER HAMPER PROJECT:

Hanger Hamper STEP 1:

Find a cardboard box that will hold hangers and fit in the spot in your closet you want to store this. We get lots of Amazon boxes and I just waited a couple weeks until I found one that I thought would work. If you are not a big Amazonner- ask your daughter, your neighbor or someone that is!

Hanger Hamper STEP 2:

Then stack your wire hangers in a pile and figured out the best way to configure the DIY Hanger Hamper. Make sure you have the largest size hanger your dry cleaner uses. Mine actually uses three different kinds of hangers depending on the product. My box is 15.5″ l x 10.5 w and 6″ h.  There are lots of different ways a box could be configured to work though.

Hanger Hamper STEP 3:

Depending on your box and configuration, you may need to cut out notches or do a little engineering. For mine, I cut out a notch for the hanger tops to stack out of the box.  I also removed a section of the box where the hangers will be inserted.

Hanger Hamper STEP 4:

Wherever you cut notches, tape it all back up with shipping tape.

Hanger Hamper STEP 5:

It doesn’t have to be all pretty but since I like things pretty I spray painted ours. And then because I am a crazy blogger girl, I added some wood grain duct tape. This really helped to make it stronger and also makes it much nicer to look at it. But if you aren’t a crazy blogger girl, this step could definitely be skipped.

Hanger Hamper STEP 6:

Then stick the Hanger Hamper in your husband’s closet and leave him a super passive aggressive note. 🙂  #TRUTH

Ha ha. I don’t even think he noticed it. Probably for the best. But he was actually pretty happy to have a solution!
