{Derby DIY} Horse Moss Centerpiece

in Lifestyle on 04/10/16

Wow, how is it ALREADY Monday again? If you follow me on Instagram, you are aware that the Master’s weekend is kind of like a holiday week around here. This year was extra festive since the Big Sweet and I actually went to Augusta on Friday. It was my first time and it truly was as amazing as I expected. What a special treat and definitely a bucket list checker for me.

Before things got too crazy around here last week, I knocked out a couple Derby DIY’s. This large and in charge horse was the first thing I tackled. I found this sad thing at the thrift store for around $4 a few months back and have been waiting for inspiration to strike on giving her a “Derby-Do”. Can you just picture the 4 year old that had a heyday cutting this poor horses hair off?

You can tell by the spray paint can that this Beauty is BIG! At first I painted her gold but she was too blingy. So then I went with a hammered metal spray paint I had and thought it suited her just right.  But the HAIR…. or should I say… NO HAIR situation was stumping me.

But inspiration finally did strike and I love the way she turned out. If you are hosting a derby party, this would make such a fun centerpiece!

Supplies Needed:

  1. Large Plastic Horse (hair is optional apparently)
  2. Metallic Hammered Spray Paint (or really any color that fits your party scheme)
  3. Reindeer Moss
  4. Elmers Adhesive Spray
  5. Felt

To cover up the hair, or should I say lack of hair, I thought moss could work. At first I tried some Spanish Moss but the long spiral locks made her look like Cher or something.  After rummaging around the craft stash and trying a couple things, I landed on a bag of Reindeer moss that I had bought at the Dollar Tree. I also had some Elmer’s Adhesive spray and was shocked that it worked to keep the moss intact. I just placed the moss on, sprayed it, added more, sprayed it, and repeated until I used up the bag of moss.

I think her Derby-Do is perfect now!

But the paint and hair weren’t quite enough. I thought she needed a saddle towel. And since I made this before my Carolina Tarheels played in the National Championship game, I was feeling optimistic and went ahead and gave this horse a #1. They are still winners in my book.

To make this saddle towel, I just grabbed some baby blue felt, trimmed it to fit over the back and hot glued the felt number onto it. The gold bars were by luck just sent to me as part of the Swap it Like It’s Hot challenge and I thought they were a fun addition.

Because I am a craft supply hoarder and had many of the supplies needed on hand, I am pretty pumped that this fun diy horse moss centerpiece only cost me around $6 to make. I think she will be perfect to display on the table.

  • horse $4
  • moss $1
  • felt- it’s $0.33 a sheet at Hobby Lobby
  • spray paint- leftover from previous project

I know I got lucky finding this horse for a deal and had alot of the supplies on hand, but if you are looking for a show stopper centerpiece for your Derby party- this is a fun DIY. I think a horse completely covered in moss would be pretty fantastic too.
