{Mom’s Garden} Blue Bottle Tree

in create, Outdoor, Porch Life on 09/01/15

This blue bottle tree has become a staple in my parents back yard. Read on for how it came to be!

Back when I was a junior in high school my Dad came home and said he found us a new house. It was two miles away from our current house and we were going to love it.

Um…. I didn’t realize we were looking to move?

Yep. We were going to move from a 6 year old house to a 30+ year old house. That looked 30+ years old.

Let’s just say he had vision.

While the house needed lots of work he knew the lot was priceless. You see, it is nestled on a small lake with a beautiful view and backyard.  An oasis right smack dab in the middle of the busy city.

They have since updated the house and now their little oasis has become a fun playground for the boys. The backyard remains the center of attention and Mom has added a couple fun yard art pieces over the years.

I thought you would enjoy seeing her blue bottle tree.

How to Make a Bottle Tree

Dad built the “trunk” using a post hole digger and a 4×4 post.  For the “limbs” mom nailed in various rebar, stakes and nails to hold the blue bottles.

Mom put the word out to her friends to save their blue bottles and before she knew it, the tree had grown.

Bottle trees have a long and interesting background here in the south. Similar to my Haint Blue ceilings on our front porch that I shared a few years back, folklore believes they ward off evil spirits.

While Mom certainly isn’t trying her hand at voodoo, she does love blue and this is a fun addition to the beautiful view from their porch.

So what do you think? I am tempted to make one for our backyard but pretty sure the boys would turn it into a toy. Or a ladder. Or a baseball bat target. So I will just enjoy hers for now!

Gorgeous! I live on a lake in South Carolina and my next door neighbor's have a very colorful bottle tree on their dock that I enjoy seeing every day. Love seeing it in all different light and seasons – so appreciate that they put it up!

That would look awesome! My mom isn’t a wine drinker either but she asked her friends to save them. I think she also found some sparkling water that had the blue glass bottles. Good luck!

Bud Light also comes in these lovely blue bottles. As I live in a 2nd floor apartment, I wanted to make a small blue bottle “bush”, instead of a tree. Secured it in a planter and had my neighbor drink the beer so I could use the bottles. 😺

I saw one of these years ago in a beautiful yard of a house that was for sale. I’ve wanted one ever since. These instructions make that a possibility. Thanks
