Southern State of Mind Blog by Heather

Part 1: A New Play Room (Before)

in Lifestyle on 03/18/14

Today and I am going to share a little project we have been up to at the house! And when I say little, I mean BIG because it involved removing a wall!

You know my typical speed is little tips on home decor or crafts that you can easily knock out, but today I am sharing an exciting renovation we recently did to help add some much needed space to our home! Before I get into the details, let me first say that I am in LURVE with the way it turned out and wish we would have done it years ago.

OK, now that I got that off my chest, let me back up a bit.

We have this room.

It is off the kitchen/informal dining room.
We call it a “sunroom” but it really is a completely finished room.
I love everything about it.

The sunroom serves as access between the house and the back porch. It has blue planked ceiling. It has 3 sides windows. It has a great neutral rug floor.

This room is also off the main back door that we use most often. It’s right off the main artery of the house. Seriously, what’s not to love?

Well. It barely ever gets used.  The fact is, it never really had a functioning purpose- which you know is a big no-no for me! I never purchased any new furniture for it because I never really had a reason. I always had visions that I would read or sit out here when we had friends over. I tried various room set ups and nothing really ever materialized.

Sure, when we entertained people would sometimes collect in here. When I hosted parties and showers, I would set up a table for eating. But in the 4 years we lived here, it was apparent that this was completely under-utilized square footage.

So, back in December, we decided to test this space as a dumping ground playroom. We took all of the toys from all over the house and piled them up in this room.

And we loved it. The space is right off the kitchen and it was so nice to have all of toys nearby but kind of out of sight.

So, we developed a plan to remove the wall and open the space up completely. I gotta tell you, I was nervous. What if we hated it? What if it looked weird? Here are the before shots of the wall with the double doors removed:

Check back tomorrow for the AFTER!
