I have a long way to go on getting our primary bedroom pulled together, but I did find some time this week to tackle a DIY project for the room. It feels great to have a start. I am hoping this little update will spark the motivation needed to tackle some bigger changes in here. If you missed it, I am giving our primary bedroom a makeover this spring as part of the One Room Challenge. I have loads of plans and pages of to-do lists and only five weeks left to pull it off so it is time to get busy.
This week it was all about transforming a big piece of thrift store art. When I stumbled upon this large framed painting for $40 at my local thrift store last February- I knew it was coming home with me! I loved the large size and the fun gold frame (and the $40 price!), and knew I could paint over what was in there. I figured I would come up with something to use it for but I didn’t know quite what.
So it sat in our garage. And it sat. And sat. I don’t know if looking at an unfinished project every time you pull into the garage is depressing or motivating…I guess a little of both. So I am glad this will no longer taunt me when I pull in. Because I finally had the inspiration and motivation to give this thrift store find a makeover and I think it will definitely help elevate the swank factor I am looking for!
THRIFT STORE STATEMENT ART
We have a local art show every January that I really enjoy attending and always find SO much inspiration. This year I came across this great piece and have since found myself referring back to it- I just love the color combination. I am not much of an artist but I do like to “play” with paint and it hit me that I could use this as inspiration for my thrift store transformation.
So I made a quick stop into Hobby Lobby to grab the paint. Then I took the frame apart and laid the canvas out in my art studio (ahem- on a Dollar Tree shower curtain on my dining room table) and got to work. Over the course of a day I spent several 15 minute increments adding layers and colors until it felt somewhat “done”.
Is it anywhere as cool as the inspiration? No. But for around $50 I do think it adds some fun color and a dose of swagger in here so I will take it.
Alright- one project down. Endless projects to go! Wish me luck this week – it really is time to put my head down and GET TO WORK!
