Trip Recap – Our Weekend at Lake Toxaway, NC

in travel on 09/16/19

If you’ve never heard of Lake Toxaway in North Carolina, that would have made two of us! Up until a few months ago, I was completely unfamiliar with this little slice of heaven and I am almost reluctant to share this post as I’d like to just keep it a secret!

Family Weekend Getaway Guide to Lake Toxaway

But I also love sharing my favorite things with you – so let’s just keep it our little secret. Deal? 🙂

Lake Toxaway

We decided to beat the heat over Labor Day and head up to Lake Toxaway in North Carolina for our three day weekend. Located 2.5 hours north of Atlanta, it was an easy drive and we were thrilled to have a cooler destination to get away to.

Weekend Getaway Guide to Lake Toxaway

Lake Toxaway is a quaint private lake in Western North Carolina. Actually, when I say quaint it is only 640 acres and around 14 miles of shoreline. The beauty of this is that the lake is private so unless you are staying on the lake, you can not use the lake-  as there is no public boat ramp access to put boats in. There is one marina on the lake that has boat rentals called Lake Toxaway Marine.

This really did make the entire experience wonderful as it was not crowded and mostly homeowners just enjoying “their” lake. The other nice part of this trip is that we didn’t have to drive to enjoy the amenities as we could rent boats, use the pool, dine and relax all right from our hotel room.

|| WHAT WE DID  ||

We arrived on Friday afternoon and once we settled in to our room we went over to the Inn to grab dinner. They had board games for us to use and the kids ran around outside on the hill while we waited for our food. After dinner, we did some fishing (we brought our own fishing poles) and enjoyed some time by the fire pit.

Lake Toxaway Marina Boat Rentals

Saturday we rented a boat from the Lake Toxaway Marina right on site at the Inn. The weather was perfection, and we all enjoyed swimming and tubing. In all honestly, the water was a few degrees too cold for my liking. I think had we gone a little earlier in the summer, it would have been perfect. The water is crystal clear!

On Sunday we planned to explore another nearby lake. So we drove about 30 minutes over to Lake Glenville and enjoyed the day exploring that lake. Here, we rented from Lakeshore Marina. Lake Glenville is a bit larger but still very easy to navigate. There were two waterfalls and we had some friends on the lake so we just had fun cruising around and exploring.

I just loved both lakes and they are actually quite different even though they are so close to each other!

On Sunday afternoon, we enjoyed the pool at the Inn. Their pool wasn’t the greatest, but a new one was under construction and I have no doubt it will be amazing when they are done!

That night we ate over at the Lake Toxaway Country Club. If you are staying at the Greystone Inn, you have access to the club dining and golf. The club is connected to the Inn so it was all very convenient. Here is the view from the outdoor patio at Lake Toxaway CC. You can see how close the marina is, and the Inn is to the right of the marina.

Monday morning it was time to head home and we took our time enjoying the morning. We stopped off to hike to falls (it was only a half mile!) and that was a fun little extra moment of the vacation. There were lots of parks and waterfalls that I think would be fun to explore next time we are in the area.

|| WHERE WE STAYED  ||

For our stay, we stayed at the Greystone Inn. This beautiful piece of property is set up on a hill with great views of the lake. It is part of the Southern Living Hotel collection and with only 30 rooms,  it perfectly aligned with the lake. We stayed in the Hillmont building- in a classic room. Plenty spacious for the 4 of us and it had a little fridge.

I failed to snap a photo of our room but I did snap this shot view from our covered porch. I LOVED my coffee out here every morning (I brought my own creamer and put in in the fridge and there was a Keurig in the room!) and also read a book out here over the weekend!

Overall, it was a great weekend destination for our family and I loved exploring Lake Toxaway!

Happy trails,

XOXO-

Heather
