Southern State of Mind Blog by Heather

Back Porch Deck-orating

in Porch Life on 05/29/15

Happy Friday friends! Hope you have a fun weekend planned. We are spending our weekend with dear friends that are visiting that we have claimed as family.

Last week I shared our Southern Summer Adventure list and I am happy to report that we have already started crossing a few things off the list. While we have lots of fun things planned this summer, there will be many, many, many, nights we will spend at home this summer. With two littles it isn’t exactly easy to scoot around town these days. So I gave our back porch a quick spruce up a few weeks back and I am excited to share it with you today.

I have big dreams for this space. I would love for it to become a true extension of the house as a screened in porch.

But that is for someday.

For today, it’s all about making it comfortable for our family to hang out and in-home-date-nights. You know the ones I am talking about right? When you pour yourself a glass of wine and settle in to the comfort of your own home once the kiddos are down. Is there anything better?

What I realized when updating this space is that just a few small details can really go a long way. And of course, you don’t have to spend much to achieve it.

I spent some time updating the porch a few years back with this DIY Outdoor Rug and collecting a few colorful pillows. I keep them out all summer but store them inside for the winter and they have held up several years.

This year, I didn’t do much except add a few new small details.

The tree trunk side table is a new addition. Yes, I pulled over and heaved it into my trunk. My children really will think I am crazy someday.

One of the main little details for this outdoor space is the lighting. We strung them almost 5 years ago. Can you believe they are still holding on? I am hoping to write a separate post on how we did this. It was REALLY easy.

This little detail hands down adds the most atmosphere to the space. It really makes the porch feel like a room and when it is dark it gives us great lighting.

This year I added this votive candelabra that my mom gave me. Candles are also a great way to add some inexpensive atmosphere lighting.

Sweet Bella normally isn’t too far.

Another fun addition is the “kid zone”.

I wish I could invite each of you over to hang on the porch and catch up! But since we can’t, I would love to hear what you are up to this weekend.

Happy weekend, make it fun!
Heather

Love the space and your mini-makeover!! Where is your "wicker" furniture from? I am in the market for an outdoor set like that. Would appreciate your advice on what has held up best for you? Thanks!

Pretty! I could so see myself hanging out there all summer…so inviting with all of those cheerful, summery colors. Love that DIY striped rug and the string lights.

Lovely!!! I'd love to have lights around our deck or patio. But, for now, we are focusing on some landscaping. We spent a few hours getting rocks out of my parents' property for our new garden bed. Have a great weekend!

I've been wanting to do similar lights but was wondering how they'd work since we won't have a covered porch at our new house. So glad to hear that they'll last (and last) even if they're out in the weather!
