Bunk Beds for Little Buddy’s Room

in HOME on 01/13/21

Over Christmas break, we assembled new bunk beds for our Little Buddy Sweet B (age 6). He had been begging for bunk beds and since his room is fairly small- we agreed that it was a good idea. When I shared some of the progress as we were putting them together over on Instagram- I had so many people ask me about which bunk beds we went with so I figured I would share more details and a few bunk bed tips if you are ever in the market.

First things first, let’s get one thing straight – furniture shopping is overwhelming! I probably hunted online 5 or 6 different times before I was anywhere near ready to pull the trigger on this purchase. There are just so many options and prices and configurations. We knew we wanted a full on the bottom and a twin on top so that was how I first narrowed it down. I also knew we would probably only use this furniture for a couple years so I was able to eliminate expensive options like Pottery Barn. He really wanted a built-in desk but I was just having a hard time finding one that I liked with that feature. In the end, we went with this one from Wayfair.

I have never owned (or shopped) for bunk beds before- so here are a few things I have learned in the process:

  • The direction of the ladder matters -so be sure to consider when ordering! It is helpful if you know the orientation of how the bed will go in the room before you decide which bunk bed to order. If we had this bed going against the wall a different way, his pillows would be under the ladder.
  • The next big tip is to make sure you have enough clearance between the bottom mattress and the top. We didn’t have to purchase any new mattresses for our configuration but at first I used one of our plush pillow top mattresses for the bottom bunk. NOPE! It added a good six inches to the bottom level height making the space between the two levels too tight. If I could go back, I would have maybe tried to order one with a bit more clearance between the two levels.
  • As everyone has always said- making the top bed is definitely a pain! But I haven’t found it to be too bad- although we don’t use it every day.

The assembly for this particular bed wasn’t too bad- all in it probably took 3-4 hours over two days. Overall, we are happy with this sweet little set up for our Little Buddy. One bonus benefit is that the entire top twin bed can be removed so if and when we decide we are over the bunk- the existing frame can stay intact below. It’s nice to have furniture that can be a bit more versatile for options down the road.

I love that the flag gallery wall works with this new bed, although he would much prefer to have Star Wars posters taped everywhere. In fact, this is why I can only share this corner of the room… 🙂

Love the bed and room decor. I purchased bedding from Beddies for my grandson’s bunk beds. The one piece bedding zips up each day and the bed is made. All nice and neat. Its like having beautiful bedding in a sleeping bag. Beautiful, functional and easy!
