Before you decide that you are not artistic and close this post, let me tell you that this “How to Make Abstract Art” tutorial is the easiest project you will probably do all year. And you really can’t do it wrong! Oh- and it is FREE. (or at least super inexpensive) And it only takes a few minutes. Oh, and it’s kind of the perfect art for finishing off a room when you can’t commit to things. 🙂
Do I have your attention yet?
Last year, when I gave our guest bathroom a makeover, I added some a pair of framed pink DIY abstract art. I had the frames on hand that I grabbed knowing that while I didn’t love the art, I would find a spot for them. Right here was the perfect place! Since I have a houseful of boys, it is fun to infuse a little pink here and there.
How to Make Abstract Art- Supplies Needed
For this art, you will only need a few supplies. My guess is that you have most of them already on hand:
- Craft paint in your color choice (or use any paint you already have on hand for free!)
- Blank Paper (grab it from your printer!)
- Paint Brush
- Pair of frames (I pick them up at the Goodwill whenever I see some that I like- these used to have random Italian coast pictures in them!)
How to Make Abstract Art- Directions
STEP 1: How to Make Abstract Art
First, you will need to determine how big you want your art to be. Since my frames had mats, I knew I wanted my paper to be smaller than the standard 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. So I trimmed my blank paper down to the size I wanted.
STEP 2: How to Make Abstract Art
Now grab a paper plate, your paint and paintbrush. Squeeze a little glob of paint onto the paper plate and dip your paint brush in the paint. Just get a little paint so you can control how much paint goes on the paper.
STEP 3: How to Make Abstract Art
Now- just draw some circles and shapes until you have something you like! There is seriously no wrong way to do this. And of course, if you do mess up or need a few tries to get it right, just keep scribbling away until you have a pair of drawings you are happy with.
STEP 4: How to Make Abstract Art
Once the art is dry, just tape it inside the frame and hang!
That is it. Now you can make all of the abstract art you need!

These are still two of my favorite things in the bathroom! That hot pink is just so pretty!! I’m with you on needing to find little spots here and there to bring in some girly touches! These boys can’t take over the ENTIRE house!
