{DIY} Truck Cozy Coupe Makeover

in create, Easy DIY, Simple Gifting on 01/26/17

Hi there! Happy Friday! We made it through another week. It was a fast one here, the Big Sweet was out of town all week at an annual conference. While I usually take this week to tackle a big project, I decided to binge Gilmore Girls and work on the back end of the blog when Mom duty was done. It was JUST what I needed! Today I am going to share a Truck Cozy Coupe Makeover that I tackled right before Christmas. Admittedly, this post has a pretty narrow niche, but if you know me personally you know my children have a major Ghostbuster obsession.

M-A-J-O-R.

Basically since last September little Sweet B has been singing Ghostbusters and getting “ghosts.” So it would make perfect sense that an old Cozy Coupe would have a Cozy Coupe Makeover and become a Ghostbusters car. This was such a fun part of Christmas for me!

So if you aren’t into Cozy Coupes and Ghostbusters then check back next week. But if you have a little one that would love this, you are in the right place!

OK, here is how it started. Every time we asked Sweet B what he wanted for Christmas he would just say “Ghostbusters”. So I was racking my brain trying to figure out something unique to get the little guy for Christmas. I mean, what do you really get a second child that has everything he could possibly ask for? Then it hit me! How about his very own life sized Ghostbuster Ecto-1 car? We had a Cozy Coupe  sitting in the garage really not getting much attention and I knew it would make the perfect present for him.

So I went hunting down in the garage and pulled out the Truck Cozy Coupe. It was in great condition and I had a vision!

Little Tikes Batman Car

Once I confirmed the Cozy Coupe would work, I started to collect my supplies. This was really fun actually. I did a little online research and then just went cruising the aisles of Home Depot and a quick stop at Wal-mart.  What I consider the crown jewel- the police beacon- was ordered from Amazon.

Supplies Needed for Truck Cozy Coupe Makeover

  • Little Tikes Cozy Coupe
  • White Spray Paint (I used Rustoleum suitable for plastic toys)
  • Painters Tape
  • Red Acrylic Paint & Foam Brush

Accessories I used to finish off the Cozy Coupe Makeover :

  • Ecto-1 License Plate
  • Red reflection tape
  • Blue Police Beacon (battery operated)
  • Velcro to attached Police light
  • Pair of Vinyl 5″ Ghostbuster Stickers
  • Blue tubing found at Home Depot
  • Brackets to affix blue tubing to side of car
  • White PVC pipes cut down to size and painted yellow
  • Yellow/Black Duck Tape to add to PVC pipe

STEP 1: Cozy Coupe Makeover

I washed the Truck Cozy Coupe and removed the crud that had gathered in the crevices. Then I taped off all of the areas I didn’t want to paint using painters tape. You can see how I used plastic grocery bags on the tires and steering wheel.

STEP 2: Cozy Coupe Makeover

It got a new coat of paint! I used Rustoleum Gloss White that is suitable paint for plastic toys. Mine sort of bubbled up on the first coat (see below) because I think it was a little too cold outside so had to do the next two coats in the garage.

STEP 3: Cozy Coupe Makeover

Now is the fun part! Collect all of the Ghostbuster elements to make it look legit. I studied multiple examples I found online and then went to Home Depot, Walmart and even ordered a few pieces from Amazon. This was definitely a labor of love one week before Christmas, but I was one determined Mama! The tubes on top are PVC pipes and caps from Home Depot that I painted yellow and added Duck Tape. The funnel was from Walmart.

STEP 4: Cozy Coupe Makeover

Now go to town making it a Ghostbuster car! I added the red paint, the stickers and drilled the license plate in. I did enroll the help of my Dad when it came to affixing the top contraption. I knew he would have much better ideas than me on how to get it all to stay together. Thanks Dad!

Cozy Coupe Makeover

We used velcro to attach the police light so I can replace the batteries if needed.

I was pretty excited that the blue tubing I found from Home Depot fit exactly in the Truck Cozy Coupe gas tank- that was a happy accident!

Then my Dad drilled a hole in the hood and we stuck the other end to the front.

I ordered the pair of Ghostbuster logo stickers from Amazon to put on each side.

For my license plate, I just found an image of the Ecto-1 license plate, printed it off and laminated it. Then I used some screws to put it directly into the Cozy Coupe.

Sweet B was thrilled on Christmas morning when he realized he had his very own Ecto-1 Ghostbusters car. I love that we gave life to a new toy and it was fun to make his little dreams come true!

xoxo-

This was such a fun project for you and little Brooks drove around in that car all Christmas Day with the biggest grin on his little face..singing “Who ya gonna call?” “Ghostbusters” Such a cute idea and the fact that you used an old toy that was not being used is awesome~ Great Job Heather!

Hi Heather I am making one for my grandson. I see some round metal item toward the front that seems the blue tube connects to, is it a bike bell? are the pvc tubes glued on or screwed on or what. How did your dad do that and get the funnel attached. thanks ever so much

Yes, the round metal thing is a bike bell. It was made to go around handlebars but it fit around the blue piping instead. The yellow PVC tubes were screwed from the bottom of the roof up into them. For the funnel, we just made hole and it stuck into it. It was definitely a learn as we go situation! Good luck with yours!
