Hey there! The “31 Days of Fall in the South” series continues today with a fun (and EASY) tutorial.
I was going to hold off on posting this tutorial until next week but I had so many people ask me about this rug on the Touch of Fall home tour yesterday. Then I posted it on Instagram and people loved it. THEN Better Homes and Gardens posted it on their Instagram page and lots more people were asking about it… so I figured I would go ahead and share how I made it.
It’s easy peasy.
DIY Welcome Mat Tutorial – Come In + Cozy Up
TOOLS & MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THIS DIY WELCOME MAT PROJECT:
- Plain Welcome Mat (I found mine at Ikea for $4.99)
- Black Paint
- Foam Paint Brush (or any small paint brush)
- Chalk/Highlighter
STEPS TO FOLLOW FOR THIS DIY WELCOME MAT TUTORIAL- COME IN + COZY UP PROJECT:
STEP 1:
First, I started with a trip to Ikea. I had exactly 20 minutes until I needed to leave for carpool and 2 items on the list.
Mission accomplished.
Step 2:
With the rug in hand, I pulled up my inspiration picture which is a rug from West Elm. (It’s currently available for $29 HERE if you don’t feel like making one of your own!)

Step 3:
Using that image as my inspiration, I grabbed some chalk and roughly sketched out the cursive letters. This was mostly to ensure that my spacing was good. I was having some issues with my chalk and actually used a highlighter as well which worked. Basically, you just want to sketch out your letters before you start painting. I forgot to take a pic of this step, but you can kind of see a little pink in this picture below.
Step 4:
Paint over the stencil with black paint. I actually used chalkboard paint because that is what I had on hand but any black paint will do!
Now, pour yourself a cup of coffee, get a pumpkin and call it fall!

This is too cute!! And yay for your BHG insta feature! You’re already rockin’ fall 😉
Thanks! Now I just need it cool off. It was literally 90 degrees this morning at Parker’s soccer game. Melted!
I really love this mat, it’s perfect for fall!
