Girls Weekend Guide to Asheville

in Girls Weekend, The South, travel on 03/23/17

I am so excited to share a recap of the weekend I recently spent for a Girls Weekend in Asheville, NC. A few months ago my Sister and I decided it had been too long (exactly: NEVER) since just the two of us got away for a girls getaway. With her living up in Boone, NC and me being in Atlanta, we pretty quickly determined that a Girls Weekend Asheville, NC would be the most ideal location for a meeting spot.

And let me tell you something- it was more than ideal- it was PERFECT! I am so appreciative that we got to have this special time together. I think the Sweets at home had fun having “guys weekend” so it was a win-win for everyone. Weekend in Asheville NC

My Sister had been to Asheville many times, but this was my first trip and I was so excited to explore the city. I am not sure how it is even possible that I have never visited since it is only 3.5 hours from home. Before we left we had one goal: NO ITINERARIES ALLOWED. Since I had not been before, I turned to Instagram for some recommendations and so many people came through with some great suggestions. Combined with my Sister knowing some great spots and both of us taking a go-with-the-flow attitude, we had fun rambling through the quaint city and enjoyed the slow pace of having nowhere to be.

I was looking forward to some downtime with my sister and of course getting into some shenanigans. (of course shenanigans these days means gorging on cheese dip and sleeping in…) And we were laughing too hard to get a good picture of us in our “shenanigans” shirts!

OUR ITINERARY:  Girls Weekend Asheville, NC

Sister and I arrived at dusk on Friday evening and enjoyed a few hours of downtime in our room at Hotel Indigo to catch up and relax. We streamed some tunes on the speaker in our room and just chilled before dinner. By 8:00 we decided we should venture out for some food. We ended up at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants called Bar Taco. It is SO tasty. After dinner we wandered the streets and popped in a couple different breweries  as we walked back home.

On Saturday we were up early and grabbed some amazing breakfast at Early Girl Diner. I loved that they had coffee while we waited and the wait was so worth it because the food was divine.

Of course, we both had our Fitbits on and wanted to get our 10,000 steps so after breakfast we wandered up and down the streets- I loved this “Before I Die I Want To” inspiration wall. #raise2goodmen #goals

More meandering meant more window shopping. It was my first time in an Urban Outfitters and we both laughed hysterically when we saw their fake mixed tapes. They looked exactly like what we used to make! We were hipsters before hipsters existed I suppose.  It was Sister’s first time into Anthropologie and she was smitten.

We walked through art galleries, cute shops, and of course the General Mast Store.

After all of that exploring, we decided we needed a pit stop and Wicked Weed brewery was perfect. I couldn’t believe how hopping this place was at 2:00 on a Saturday and we enjoyed people watching…. And continuous babbling … #shenanigans

We made our way back to Hotel Indigo for a quick refresh and then grabbed an Uber over to New Belgium brewery about 10 minutes away.

This was definitely fun to check out and we enjoyed a flight with a view of the French Broad River.

Our next destination was the Grove Park Inn for sunset on the porch. We arrived in plenty of time to walk the grounds and explore and then got a perfect set of chairs to watch the sunset from the sprawling veranda. THIS IS A MUST if you are in Asheville.

This place was so inviting and we didn’t expect to hang around for so long after sunset but they had both massive fireplaces going. We snagged some rocking chairs and enjoyed chatting with others. Somehow we even ended up catching some of a Ballroom Competition going on at the hotel. #dontask #shenanigans

Sunday morning we went to the Westside and grabbed breakfast at King Daddy Chicken and Waffles. This was my first experience eating Chicken and Waffles and I may just drive all the way back to Asheville just to eat there again.

WHERE WE ATE: Girls Weekend Asheville, NC

The joke with our family is that we plan our next meal at our current meal. So eating was on the top of the list for us.

New Belgium Brewery doesn’t have a restaurant but they have different food trucks that come. When we were there we got Grilled Cheeses.

King Daddy Chicken and Waffles- this was a drive from our hotel in West Asheville- but a very good destination. We stopped in our way heading back out of town.

WHERE TO STAY: Girls Weekend in Asheville, NC

Hotel Indigo is located in downtown Asheville and was the perfect spot for these two sisters to rest up. The location was perfect for walking into downtown to explore and easily could pop back at any time. It was also ideal for when we wanted to call an Uber and scoot off for a nearby destination.

The hotel room had two Queen beds with bedding fit for a Queen. We especially enjoyed the Bluetooth speaker cube so we could stream tunes. (PS- if you have Amazon Prime- you can stream SO many good tunes from the Amazon Music App- start with Leon Bridges)

The room also had a lounge chair, a desk and  the most serene bathroom with a spa like shower. I remember how giddy we used to get when we were little and would stay in a hotel with our parents. Let’s just say we felt like that times 10!

Remember how I mentioned our suitcases exploded? Yeah, this luggage rack filled to the top was our luggage for ONE NIGHT. #shenanigans

As we were leaving we were already saying how this needs to become an annual tradition for us. While we see each other several times a year there is nothing like one-on-one time. to unplug. I am grateful for the memories … and the shenanigans were too many to count.

Our next weekend in Asheville, NC trip we will definitely plan to come a little later in the spring and explore the Biltmore.  Did we miss any other MUSTS? I will add it to the list for our next getaway!

xoxo-

Heather

If you like chocolate, you must make it to the Chocolate Lounge downtown. Chocolate, beer, and desserts. Win-win-win.

What time of year was this? I see you have hats on- we’re thinking of going early March and wondering how that will be!

We were there the first week of March. It was “brisk” but nothing too bad. We sat by the huge fireplaces at the Grove Park Inn after cocktail one night. Perfection!!! Enjoy.
