How I Finally Got a Grip on My Christmas Storage

in Christmas, Organize, Our Christmas Home on 01/09/14

Tips for getting your Christmas Storage Organization done once and for all!  You can do it!

OK, I may be a little late to the Christmas Storage Organization party here. Most of you overachievers have probably had your holiday decorations neatly organized and stowed away for weeks now! Better late than never, right?

Christmas Storage Organization

Since we left for the beach on Christmas day and came back on New Years Day, my holiday decor was up pretty late. But I finally tackled it.
And when I say I tackled it, I mean I kicked it’s bootie.

I made myself a promise this year:
“GET A GRIP GIRL! NO MORE UNORGANIZED CHRISTMAS DECOR!”

Instead of being excited about decorating for Christmas this year,
I found myself dreading it.
What exactly was lurking in those tubs?

THIS IS THE BEFORE I WAS DEALING WITH, Y’ALL! And this is without any of the actual Christmas stuff that we used this year! Eek.

Taking it down from the attic was a chore.
Putting it away every year was an even bigger chore.
This was our fourth Christmas in this house and not one ounce of energy has gone into organizing the holiday decor. Each year it just became more and more obnoxious and I had reached my boiling point.

Since I still had 4 days off work once we got back into town (woo woo), there was no excuse not to finally tackle this monster! All it took was a nap one afternoon and then another hour spread over the next couple of days. (you know my secret to getting anything done is tackling it in 10-15 minute increments!)I found this storage stacker for $3 at the Goodwill- all of these ornaments were in random boxes. Now I can see exactly what is in them and all of the little Nutcrackers are living happily in the bottom drawer!

Previously, the black table was deserted on the attic floor and these underbed storage tubs were also in the attic, empty. #storagefail

I have been meaning to hang the wreaths since the day we moved in.
They have literally been stacked up all over the attic floor until now.
Why, oh why did this take me so long?

Instead of scary big black trash bags to cover the larger than life nutcrackers, I used clear dry cleaning bags.
What was I thinking before?

I found these sweet little baskets at Homegoods on clearance for $2 a piece. HELL-O! Polka dots and chevron, yes please!

For the finishing touch, I made cute labels using Picmonkey and hung an old paper star light that was just laying around from Ikea to help cover the bare lightbulb. Free and darling. Check. Check.

And for the marshmallow on top, I shamelessly stole this darling idea from Carmel at Our Fifth House. I had an old sign destined to the Goodwill pile- just gave it a quick coat of Chalkboard paint and is now claiming this space as our very own North Pole. Um, now can you blame me for just standing in my newly created North Pole just taking it all in? Who knew Christmas Storage Organization would make me so happy?

Christmas Storage Organization

OK, I understand that spending 3 hours organizing Christmas decor is not on the top of anyone’s priority list. But I promise, it feels AMAZING. Why did I wait so long? I am already counting down the days until we can decorate next year! Christmas in July anyone?
Christmas Storage Organization

This Christmas Storage Organization project came in at a whopping $6 for the 3 (adorable) baskets for $2 each.

Not only are we organized, I ended up purging a trunk load and recycling tons of cardboard boxes. Aahhhhhhh…nothing better than the high of organization!
All of these boxes are in our recycling bin!!!!

Only 352 days until Christmas! 🙂 Who’s with me?

I need to do this, too. I'm waiting for the weather to warm up some before I face the drafty attic. You did a great job. Thanks for the tip about the dry cleaning bags. While I don't have any nutcrackers, I think I'll cover my trees with them.

Ha! Yes- I was glad to have knocked this out before the crazy weather started. But I did put on my big winter coat last night to take the pictures! Good luck with your organizing, it feels amazing!

I made a *slight* attempt to organize and weed out my Christmas clutter this year. Unfortunately my dining room table is piled high with miscellaneous stuff that needs to be stored somewhere. It's on my list for tomorrow!

Way to go, Heather! I have to admit – I just took down the majority of my Christmas decor today, including our tree. I should have taken the extra effort to organize better; yours looks so good! And clearly labeled!

Omgoodness gravy! You groovy gal! I’m all about organization. At this moment I look at all my Christmas decor stacked in living room that the hubs brought down from attic. I feel relief as I go through now to display. I’m all about getting it situated. Especially with labels and color. I’m digging clear plastic to see through. Thanks for inspiring me to get up and move without feeling overwhelmed. Recycling is a must for me. My hubs calls me a box hoarder. I think I must keep it due to its amazing abilities. Thanks again your friend in Toledo Ohio

Buy some xxlarge zip lock bags with handles and hang your wreath in those. They are sealed and have a handle so nothing gets dusty in attic or garage. I do the same with lights and garlands that are wrapped on cardboard then placed in xxlarge ziplock bag on a nail in garage. Clean dust free and can see what is in bags.
