How I Turned My Armoire Into a “Bar”moire

in Home Tour, Lifestyle on 08/26/13

You probably see them every time you visit a thrift store. Or maybe you even have one in your house.
The old Armoire.
It used to hold TV’s. You know, back when TV’s were big square boxes.
Armoire turned Barmoire
I remember being so excited back when I bought this entertainment center.
It was my first big furniture purchase out of college and I was so excited to decorate my first place.

 Fast forward a couple years.

ok,ok…so more than a couple. Geesh.
We had this large piece of furniture.
No TV that we owned actually fit in it anymore.
We had a growing collection of bar items. We had a ranch house with limited space that needed to be used wisely.

With a few simple touches, I turned this old entertainment center armoire into a useful, functional bar for our living room.

First up, I found a mirror for a couple bucks at the thrift store.

It just screamed bar when I saw it.
I just leaned it across the back to give it the bar look.
Next, I added a ledge across the back to give the bottles some height.

Then I just loaded up the armoire with other bar accessories and now it is a barmoire!

Barmoire Living Room

I found this cube for storing wine and giving the open space some height.

Of course, a little lamp for the nightcaps.

Then, it’s time to stock the bar!

Soda fits perfectly down where the cable box would have gone.

Love this extra functional storage using a piece of furniture we already had!

Great idea! I love how it hides innocently in the corner, looking all pretty and then so full of function too. And the pup in the last photo is too cute.

We have this exact same armoire in our living room – bought in late 2003 (my how the time has flown!) and much like you, this was our first 'adult' purchase just after college graduation. We were so so proud and in love with it! It still houses our old massive box TV that we never use – since we have newer flat screens in other rooms – and my husband keeps telling me we should sell it on craigslist… but I just can't part with such a lovely piece that I have so much sentiment wrapped in. This post has come at the perfect time! I cannot wait for him to see your transformation tomorrow morning 🙂 Oh, and Charles, when you see this – I was thinking we could use the lower drawers to store our board games, blankets, etc! Thanks for the fantastic post, Heather – this looks great!

Good to know I am the only that can't seem to part with my first adult purchase!:) Great idea on blankets and games. We use one drawer for our wine bottles and extra mixers, etc. and the other drawers holds baby toys and books! So glad to know that my post was helpful! Good luck and keep me posted on your transformation!

Very cool idea! I love this. I am looking for some piece of furniture to turn into a liquor cabinet for my front room as well.

Love this! We did something similar with an oak cabinet my mother had given me and had previously used as a pantry. She told me not to get rid of it, but we already had a pantry in our kitchen, so a bar it became! I think it's so wonderful to repurpose those larger items in our homes to make them fit our needs. I love the lamp and mirror you added!

Sounds like a perfect use of the oak cabinet. I agree that it is tough sometimes to want to hold onto a piece of furniture, but still try to make it functional. Thanks so much for stopping in!
