{Preppy Eclectic} Big Boy Room Reveal

in BOY MOM, Home Tour on 03/28/15

Y’all. I am SO excited that Boy Mom Madness is finally here!

To recap, Boy Mom Madness is something I started working on before the holidays and I can’t wait for you to be COMPLETELY inspired! Seriously, if you are a boy mom you are going to be rocked this week because 15 bloggers with 36 boys will be weighing in on what makes their boy mom world tick. And if you are a girl mom, that’s cool too because everything you see will rock anyone’s world!  Be sure to click on the links below to see all of the other rooms!

Today I am sharing Mr. Big Stuff’s (MBS) room. MBS is our threenager and he makes our family awesome. He makes me laugh out loud at least once a day, but actually usually more like ten. I honestly am a terrible blogger seeing as how I technically pulled this room together about a year ago before the baby was born. Along the way, I shared many of the DIYs but as I was putting this Boy-Mom Madness campaign together, it occurred to me that I have never actually shared the whole room in one post.

OK. I am feeling kind of wordy so I guess I better get on with the show!

Obviously I finished this room before I defined my official “Preppy Eclectic” style, but I’d say it pretty much fits perfectly. So, we will call it the Preppy Eclectic Big Boy Room. 🙂 Sound good?!?

And without further ado, here we go!

preppy eclectic big boy toddler room

First up, I painted some navy and white striped walls. This room was previously the guest room and we started with a solid navy wall. However, it felt heavy and dark. Nothing a couple bright white stripes can’t help to really brighten things up! The campaign nightstand was a thrift store find that I painted white. The Coca-Cola tray is a mandatory item around these parts and I love it for corralling books in his room.

I recently found this little book shelf. It may or may not have been in the dumpster. But whatev, it is perfect for this room! 🙂
I love how the vintage globe collection (yard sale finds, thanks Mom and Dad) looks on it, and the books that were previously piled into baskets are a little more organized now. High five for a little dumpster diving repurposing!

This artwork. Sigh.
It is one of my favorite things in his room. It is actually a picture of MBS on his great grandfather’s (my Grandpa) 1935 Ford. If you’ve been around long enough, you know Mr. Big Stuff is into cars. Like, REALLY into cars. He can spot a Ford Mustang from a mile away, freaks out when a car truck carrier goes by, and absolutely loves race cars and Hot Rods. I blame it partly on being a boy, but mostly I think it’s in his genes.
I took the original image to Staples and had a large-and-in-charge engineer print done for a whopping $6. I love the funky black and white image, but love what the image is even more. And those little 8 week old legs…sniff, sniff.

Moving on… the rug is from Mohawk, the navy chair is a thrift store find, the framed flag was my husband’s grandmothers. The bedding is a hodge podge of patterns and textures- Ralph Lauren velvet navy pillows, Pottery Barn madras comforter and Mickey Mouse sheets. Hey why not?

Because you know I am a total sucker for pillows, I had to pile a few on his bed. Love this Atlanta pillow and black and white spotted pillow because the room needed some black. Yep, black is sometimes the missing ingredient when your room starts to feel matchy-matchy and helps to anchor the space.

The bed, dresser and chest were hand-me-downs from my mother in law. What started as old boring plain furniture is now young and fun. I love the dapper two toned gray and green and think the little guy will be able to grow into it for years to come. I also love that it was free.

Of course, I had to take the whole “dapper” look one step further. Oh hello there, I “must-ache” you to open up these drawers! (yes I am verah verah easily amused.)
The mirror on the dresser came with the had me down dresser. So of course it got a DIY makeover. I spray painted it navy and added a white Greek Key Detail.
The curtain rods were a DIY using pieces and parts from the hardware store. Yep, that is just galvanized pipe, a great way to make an industrial look for less. For the curtains, I used the Jo Jo Twill fabric from Online Fabric Store. This fabric was exactly the look I had in mind. Fun for a toddlers room, with a modern pattern, but still simple and adult enough for Mom to love and a pattern he can grow bigger with! Also, even though there is a pattern, it feels neutral enough to work with everything else going on in the room, because you know if mixing patterns is wrong I don’t want to be right.
My parents had this vintage Radio Flyer wagon in their basement. I love it for storing his lovies under the window. It is just me, or does your little sleep with 89 stuffed animals every night?

Alrighty, for some easy (and free to me!!) art for above the bed, I made this DIY Dog Silhouette Art, in honor of our family dog Bella. She is my forever gal pal because I do need to have one girl around here to keep me company, right? 🙂

And here is a collage of some of my favorite little spots. A lot of love went into making this room, and honestly, the little guy LOVES it. He really gets a kick out of these little details. And you know what they say “Happy Boy, Happy Boy-Mom!”
And just for fun, here was the room before when we used it as a guest room:

And here is the inspiration board that started it all. I love to see how rooms evolve from start to finish. While there were many elements that stayed, we definitely had some twists and turns along the way!

As you can see, it really doesn’t have to cost much to add personality to a room. For me, the key is to remember that it doesn’t happen overnight. This room is a year in the making. It is fun to let it evolve over time and enjoy the process.
Alright! That’s a wrap. I hope you enjoyed the reveal! For a quick reference to all of the DIY projects mentioned above, click on any of the links below.

This is such a great space, Heather! I love how you used the radio flyer to keep the stuffed animals contained! So many great ideas and neat details!

Heather! Heather! This room is amazing! I honestly love every little part – all the colour, pattern, DIY art, funky thrifted storage – it is all awesome. Your MBS must love spending time in his room – and more importantly you must love spending time in there with him – makes reading bedtime stories that must more special when you have such a cozy special place to do it in:)
