Do you have a “name” for your style?
Lately I have been thinking about the best words to define my style. A couple words that when I say them, people will just…get it.
However, since I am drawn to so many different styles and types of room decor, this exercise ended up being much harder than I thought it would be.
So I started writing down words that I thought described my style. I just kept a running list on my phone and added words to it when I thought of them. Still, nothing felt like the perfect description of my style.
And then it hit me when I was driving the other day.
Preppy Eclectic.
You are probably thinking to yourself…wait, these two words feel like exact opposites!
Bingo.
To me, Preppy Eclectic means traditional interiors with pops of the unexpected. The charm is in the mix of it.
I like stripes, polka dots, plaids, and animal prints…
but also love ikat and burlap.
It’s neutral.
And colorful.
I am drawn to traditional style, but I don’t like things overly formal or matchy-matchy.
It means having the freedom to mix an antique piece with modern pieces.
It’s coastal. It’s Southern.
Preppy Eclectic is collected.
It’s refined, but informal.
It is playful and colorful, but nothing is overly done.
It’s mixing and matching patterns but nothing is over the top.
Preppy eclectic is classic and modern at the same time.
The preppy side keeps you looking cohesive while the eclectic side allows you to wander.
It’s being put together without taking yourself too seriously.
Preppy Eclectic, yep I’d say it is the perfect description for my style.
What is your style?
Do you have a name for it?

That is a great name for your style! I would say our house is Charleston Rustic. If I wanted to flip it to coastal style, I could. If I wanted to switch over to rustic, not a problem. My color palette is very light blues and grays with a lot of natural woods around.

I love it! I call my style Comfortable Farmhouse Traditional because plain old Traditional can be stuffy. And plain old Farmhouse can be too rough. Preppy Eclectic is a fantastic style!

Brenna, I like your style description. I think I will borrow that because it describes me, too.

I love that you know what you like and what you don't like. You definitely have a cohesiveness to your beautiful home with lots of interesting elements in there too like the mixing of patterns and lots of textural pieces (shells in the lanterns – love that!) Thanks for sharing how you define your style at Best of the Nest…..you've got my wheels turning. I am transitioning from a more traditional home into Beachy-Eclectic-Homey (ha!!)

I like your ideas…I have been calling it traditional with a twist…but it is the same as yours. I love traditional style, but have been flirting with some unexpected pops of style too! You have explained our new traditional so well!

Your style is very pretty and magazine worthy. Preppy Eclectic suits it. I am working on defining our style in a similar manner, jotting down style words, but it is a challenging process. I keep switching between rustic, lakeside (no coast near us) and farmhouse.
