Who’s ready to “Swap It Like It’s Hot?”
um, swap it like it’s what?!?!
Today we are shifting gears to do a little thrift store swapping. This is my 2nd year participating in this swapping event and it is always fun to see what everyone does to their swapped items.
Here’s how it works… a bunch of bloggers go shopping at their local thrift stores to purchase item(s) that are desperate for some TLC for around $10-$15. Then they send those items to another blogger who is challenged to repurpose whatever treasures she receives in the mail into something new and useful.
Since I love repurposing things, I thought this would be a fun challenge to participate in. It’s just a fun reason to get crafty- and always a little bit of a challenge!
OK, let’s take a quick inventory of what Rachael from This is Our Bliss sent me. Between this and the One Room Challenge, she has been on my texting speed dial. Thank goodness for bloggy friends who understand this crazy blogging train.
OK- here we go! Let’s see what she sent….
A brown-wooden-stand-do-hickey and a paper-towel-thing-a-ma-jig.
Oh yes, I think I can work with this! (disclaimer: she actually sent a wire rack thingy too, but I just couldn’t deal with all 3 items so we will focus on these 2, mmmkay?)
First up, let’s direct our attention to the brown-wooden-stand-do-hickey.
I had several ideas for what this could become. But then finally decided to make something very practical and made a fun cake stand. To start, I painted it with my go-to Rustoleum Heirloom White spray paint. Then I taped off the bottom and gave it a quick metallic “dip” with some Rustoleum copper spray paint. For the top, I added a fun copper platter (also thrifted.) Now I have a fun cake stand or serving platter.
I styled it here as a Copper Mug station. Because apparently I am having a moment with copper. #givemeallthecopper
OK. Let’s move on to the paper towel thing-a-ma-jig.
For this update, I started with a coat of the same Heirloom White spray paint for the base and the rod got the same copper. Then I found some marble craft paper from Hobby Lobby and used Decoart Decopauge to glue it on!
At first I thought I would just use it as a paper towel holder. But then I thought it would be fun holding some ribbon in my cloffice (closet-office, hey, we will live in a small house). It’s always good to have extra storage in this little closet where I hoard my crafting supplies!
It is fun to Swap It Like It’s Hot! Especially when copper is involved. 🙂
If you want lots more inspiration, be sure to click over to all of the swappers. Oh, and I am dying to see what Emily from Two Purple Couches did with the goodies I sent her. Brass candlesticks, a pineapple cutting board and some crystals. Hmmm…. Let’s go check it out!

The ribbon holder is GENIUS! Paper looks legit like marble. And… you sent all that brass?! Kind lady.

Absolutely love that copper cake stand, such a great update!!

Yes to all the copper!! Love your new cake stand/serving tray! I may need to snatch up a paper towel holder the next time I see one because using it to store ribbon is genius! Love the marble paper you added, too – so chic.

I have a bit of an obsession with copper lately so I am loving all of your thrifted items! I need to fine a ribbon paper towel holder, so smart!

What great transformations. That cake stand looks like a designer piece and I know you’ll get tons of use from it throughout the holidays. And as an admitted ribbon hoarder, I love the your ribbon stand. You could put all your holiday ribbons on that come Christmas and tote it to whatever room you are decorating. Great job turning thrifted pieces in the stylish and functional pieces.
Amy @ My Life From Home says

Gah that cake stand is out of this world. I love it. And, what useful way to use the paper towel holder. I need to find a couple with all of the craft ribbon I have. Great transformations.
