The boys had a long weekend and we decided to sneak away to Highlands, NC for a quick spring family getaway at the Old Edwards Inn. Highlands is about 2.5 hours from Atlanta so a perfect destination for a couple nights. It isn’t quite their busy spring season yet so it wasn’t crowded and we really enjoyed just spending some down time together as a family. We did a few new outdoor adventures, relaxed and just enjoyed the fireplace in our suite and cheered on our Tarheels in the Final Four.
WHERE WE STAYED
When I was pregnant with Sweet P 11 years ago, we snuck up to Old Edwards Inn to have a quick babymoon before his arrival. Well, fast forward 11 years and we were so excited to share this gem of a spot with the boys. We were able to reserve a cottage suite which gave us a bit more room than a standard room and was just absolutely LOVELY. This Inn is oozing with charm and I felt pampered from the moment we arrived until we pulled away. The suite had a separate bedroom and the boys stayed on the sofa and rollaway bed in the main living room. Both rooms had gas fireplaces which was turned out to be a huge highlight because it got chilly at night! But the heated floors in the bathroom is really what blew the boys minds.
WHAT WE DID
There was plenty to keep us busy around this beautiful destination!
- Hike at Sunset Rock (two other hikes to check out are Whiteside Mountain- this is a two mile loop trail perfect for the boys and Dry Falls)
- Highlands Aerial Park- we did the Brave Indian Run with two zip lines and fun tree top course
- Hanging out at Whiteside Brewery- I brought a football and the boys just played in the big field
- Scaly Mountain Screamer at Highlands Outpost- This is a brand new coaster built into a hillside. You can control how slow or fast you go.
- Hot Tub at the Old Edwards Inn
- The Toy Store – Main Street Highlands, NC
DON’T MISS:
- Ice cream at Kilwins
- Quick breakfast or lunch at Mountain Fresh Grocery
- Salad & Pizza at Four65
I am so thankful for these family getaways and all of the sweet memories made!

My husband and I are going to Highlands in 2 weeks and will be staying at Old Edwards. We have never been to Highlands so thank you for the suggestions of things to do.

Aw! You will love it and I bet spring will be in bloom when you go! (The pool and wine garden weren’t yet open yet when we went) The downtown Main Street is wonderful, but of course with two little boys I didn’t get to do much shopping! Have a great time!
