Our Sea Island Weekend Getaway Recap

in Personal, style, The South, travel on 02/16/16

For years, I have heard about how wonderful Sea Island was but finally had my first chance to experience it firsthand. This past weekend, the Big Sweet and I drove down to enjoy a three night stay at the Cloister on Sea Island for a friends destination wedding.

Sea Island Getaway

The drive from Atlanta is about 4.5 hours and I was happy we decided to give ourselves an extra night to enjoy the beautiful property. For anyone not familiar with Sea Island, it is a resort on the Georgia Coast near St. Simon Island built back in the 1920’s in a Spanish/Mediterranean style.  It is a golfer’s paradise and a quintesential Southern destination. There are several hotels on the property including the Cloister, the Beach Club and the Lodge. We arrived to the Cloister on Thursday and I was blown away immediately by the hospitality.

Upon getting settled, we proceeded to tour the property. After meandering around, we landed at the Beach Club and enjoyed some apps at the Southern Tide restaurant.

Dinner Thursday night was at the River Bar at the Cloister. We had actually intended to go “off-campus” and explore St. Simons, but honestly once we were at the Cloister I never wanted to leave.

The Big Sweet played golf on Friday morning at one of the several courses with a large group from the wedding, and a girlfriend and I lounged by the pool.

Of course, if you follow me on Instagram then you know it wasn’t all R&R though. Early Friday morning I received a call from my MIL who was home watching the boys. Sweet B (the baby/19 months old) had fallen and hurt his left arm. After several calls around to strategize with neighbors and friends and the nurse at our pediatricians, we decided she should take him in for them to evaluate. One quick look and they confirmed he had what is called “Nursemaid’s Elbow” which is a dislocation of the elbow joint. Fortunately, it just required a quick adjustment at the peds and no hospital visit was necessary. Ahhhh, the life of a #boymom is never dull!

Friday night, we had the welcome dinner over at St. Simon’s Lighthouse. I loved having a reason to get a new dress!

On Saturday, we ate breakfast in the Georgian Room and I enjoyed the Fried Green Tomato Eggs Benedict. From there, we proceeded to rent bikes so we could check out the entire Sea Island property. For me, this was one of the highlights of the entire weekend.

The island is so unique because on one side of the street is beach views and on the other is marsh views. There was a house on the point here and we pretty much decided we had found our retirement home as we overlooked this view. (hey, a girl can dream.)

This weekend was extra special because not only was it a getaway for Brian and I, we were able to connect with some of our dearest friends. The bride was in graduate school with Brian when we lived in Chapel Hill and over the past 12 years since we all became friends, we have traveled the US together. What a blessing they are to us!

Saturday afternoon involved another stop at the Beach Club for lunch and before knew it we found ourselves lounging on the beach. We got very lucky with great weather and because it was off-season February timing, we had the beach to ourselves.

Then it was wedding time.

I’ll be back to share more details on the dresses I wore both nights, and it sure was fun to get decked out. I’d say we clean up well! 🙂 Check out my hot hubby in a tux- hubba-hubba.

Sure, you can put us in a dress at a 5-star hotel, but you can’t make us be too serious or stuffy! 🙂

The ceremony took place in the beautiful Spanish Lounge. My girlfriends and I had to take a peek early that afternoon when we saw them bringing in trees for the ceremony and I was able to snap this picture.  The vows were precious, of course I cried. #neverfails

From there we proceeded to the Cloister Ballroom which was breathtaking. The flowers were perfection, the band was rocking and the wedding guests were not afraid to cut a rug. Even the bride was doing her signature somersault wedding move on the dance floor. The wedding was every Southern girls dream and I could not be happier for this sweet couple!

Cheers to the bride and groom.

What a fun splurge and one that I will always appreciate. It was so nice to reconnect with my hubby and friends on Sea Island and get a first hand experience of this beautiful place. Until next time!

Sounds like a wonderful weekend away with life long friends. Hope you can plan something away with them for years to come. Love your dresses. Weddings are always a reason to dress up! Glad you had a ball!

Looks like a fabulous weekend! I have never been there, but hear it is beautiful. Question…I am looking at the same maxi dress for an upcoming trip to Cabo for hubby’s company trip. Does it run true to size? I am thinking of ordering it in the blue version. Some reviews said it was super long. I am not quite 5’8″.

It’s a great dress! Love the blue one too. I wore a size 6 and am 5’9″. The dress is long and would have dragged on the ground without heels. Remember Nordstrom has free shipping and returns so order several sizes!
