As I mentioned, a few weeks ago I was very fortunate to be able to scoot up to New York City for a few days for the Better Homes and Gardens Stylemaker event. This trip is always very special not only because the event is inspiring, but because I get to spend a few days with inspiring women! And of course, an excuse to visit NYC in the fall is always welcomed.
When it came time to pack for the trip, I was really struggling. First, the temperatures in Atlanta were extremely warm and I was having a hard time getting into fall mode. Second, the daytime temperature swings when we were going to be up there were 30 degrees! Third, I wanted to stick to my carry on luggage so I had to be strategic about what I was packing.
Here are four items that really worked for me when it came to packing. I love that these pieces were chic enough to blend right into the NYC scene, but also comfortable enough for walking around all day.
- Black Leggings
I purchased the faux leather spanx last year and they have become go-to’s in cooler temps. Of course, they are super versatile! I also love that they don’t wrinkle and can be dressed up or down.

2. Long Tunic
If you are packing leggings, you definitely need a long top. This tunic packs like a dream and is so perfect for layering. It really dresses up an outfit, but feels like pajamas. Oh- and it is under $25 (with free shipping!) and comes in 9 colors. I think this shirt is a perfect go-to for just about anyone!

3. Accessories
Obviously when it comes to packing, less is more! So an easy to way to get lots of mileage out of a basic outfit is to accessorize. I love packing a pretty hefty jewelry bag with statement necklaces, bracelets and earrings to help pack a punch without taking up much luggage space. I’ve always loved throwing on a big necklace, but lately I am into the “arm party” and love bracelets too. (I blame my closet makeover because now I can see them on display!)
4. Carry-All Bag
Since I wasn’t checking my luggage, I needed a large bag for my carry-on purse. I love this camo bag! It fits so much and even expands on the bottom to get a few more things to fit. (Usually on the way home!) It was perfect for a carry-on but also toting around the city. I also brought a small clutch for the event that stored easy in my luggage.
I am so glad I resisted the urge to check because I had more than enough to choose from using the carry-on with these key pieces. What are your go-to pieces when you travel?
xo,
Heather
It is definitely easeir if you can stick to one or two colors that go together! A few weeks ago we had a long weekend and I chose black and royal blue. It made it easy to pack and easy to choose what to wear each day! Love your ideas Heather and always find at least one idea that I can apply to my crazy world!
