{Princess Diana Inspired} DIY Royal Blue Greek Key Mirror

in Easy DIY, Lifestyle on 07/16/14

OK, now I KNOW that Princess Diana is not Greek.

But she is Royal. And there is just something about Greek Key that has such a royal feeling.

I have always loved the Greek Key pattern and this was the perfect excuse to bring a little “royalty” to my home! And since Princess Diana is also known for her royal blue sapphire ring, so of course this mirror is blue. Which is perfect, because you know I have a thing for blue.

Read on to see how I took this old free mirror from drab to super royal fab!

To start, I dragged out the mirror that came with the hand-me-down bedroom set that was given to us for the big boy room. To see what I did with the dressers that came with it, click here.

Pretty boring, huh? But you know I have a thing for mirrors and this one just needed a little love! So after a little sanding and de-ornamenting, I just taped it off to start with the painting.

Those ornamental details just popped off with a flat-head screwdriver.

First up, I gave it a coat of white. You can tell I wasn’t very careful with this step. I just applied it in the area where I knew it needed to be and didn’t really care where else it got. #itdoesn’thavetobeperfecttobebeautiful

Then, I added a border of Greek Key pattern. Since the painters tape I had on hand was too thick, I had to think outside of the box…So, I used the next best thing. WASHI TAPE!! This stuff seriously comes in handy! And applying the tape took all of 5 minutes.

Honestly, going into this project, I thought it could end up as as total craft fail. Between using washi tape and using a greek key pattern on this style of mirror, I had my doubts. But really I had nothing to lose so I went for it!

And for the last step I applied a coat of Rustoleum Navy Blue spray paint.

Once everything was dry, I peeled off the washi tape to reveal the white Greek Key border.

And Cheerio! Now I have a Royal Blue Greek Key Mirror.

Thanks Princess Di for your amazing fashion inspiration!

And of course, as with most of my projects, this one came together in multiple 5 or 10 minute increments… but this time I did most of it one-handed! 🙂

Do you have any old boring mirrors that could use a facelift? This was super easy and I think the impact is awesome! Don’t be afraid to try it! 🙂

I will be linking this up to our Princess Diana projects tomorrow at the Summer Style Soiree! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I love this project – and I love that you weren't overly fussy with the prep work, too. I love an easy project and may try to emulate this.

Thanks Candace! Any project that takes too much precision is not a project for me!! Good luck!

I love it! Can't imagine doing most one-handed but you sure have a cutie to hold. 🙂 Navy is getting right up there with black in my love of colors. This turned out beautifully!
