Hey friends! Today I am letting you in on a little secret. Well, actually it’s a big secret and one I am so excited to finally share with you here.
WE ARE BUILDING A LAKE HOUSE!
Big news, right?
OK, so let me back up a bit and start at the beginning.
About seven years ago, we started looking-and-thinking-and-scheming-and-dreaming about buying a lake house someday. If you’ve been here awhile you know we enjoy family lake trips every summer. While these were family vacations, they were also low-key research trips to help us narrow down where we would want to buy someday. We had been causally keeping our eyes open and looking at houses along the way. You can catch up past LAKE LIFE posts HERE.
Last summer, the timing felt right to get more serious and we knew we found the perfect lake for our family. It’s in North Georgia about 100 miles from Atlanta. So we started officially working with a realtor. It’s a tough market because most houses on the lake sell before they ever even hit the market! We looked and looked and nothing really felt right.
So here is where it gets interesting. Our realtor told us about a piece of property that was coming on the market.
It had never been for sale.
It had a small rustic original 90 year old fishing cabin on it.
The property checked a lot of our boxes. (minus the whole “house” part!)
But I was definitely skeptical.
Us? Build? Reallllllly?
We decided it was worth driving up and taking a look…
and we made an offer on the way home!
We definitely did not expect to build a lake house. In fact, since most of the houses we were looking at came furnished, I figured we would buy something fully furnished right down to the forks and spoons.
But instead- we ended up with this little cabin and a building journey.
We closed on the property late last summer and enjoyed using the cabin this past year. I referred to it as “glamping” when we were staying there- it was definitely an adventure! Built in the 1930’s- one bedroom, no heat, no air – but lots of options for making memories. I will be back with more details on the cabin next week. Sadly we weren’t able to keep the cabin AND do the new build- we really tried but just couldn’t make it work.
Our building timelines have been fluid as we worked with our architect to finalize the plans and get a builder lined up. But we officially broke ground! The house plans are finalized. The cabin is gone and the lot is cleared. The foundation is going in as I type this. And my Pinterest board is overflowing with inspiration and ideas.
I can’t wait to document and share the building progress here with you. We have never done much more than a bathroom renovation so this has been a huge learning experience. It has also been incredibly FUN!
We cannot wait to start making memories here, and feel so incredibly grateful to have a place we can enjoy with our family and friends. It is truly our happy place.
Let the adventure begin!
XO-
Heather
