{$100 Room Challenge} Family Den Room Reveal

in Decor, Home Tour on 09/26/17

Hi friends!

Welcome to 4th and final week of the $100 Room Challenge.  For those just tuning in, this challenge involved taking on one space, and giving it a makeover, in one monthโ€™s time, with $100 or less. Since we recently moved to our new home over the summer , this was the perfect challenge for me to stay focused on getting a room complete- and right in time for the busy holiday season!  (To get caught up on the tour of “Peach Valley”- click here. )

Now, you are all probably wondering. Did she pull it off?

Hey no spoiler alert here… you gotta read on to find out the answer! ๐Ÿ™‚

As a reminder, here was the before:

For my $100 room challenge, I tackled our family den that has great bones but was a bit of a snooze. This room is where the family kicks back and I really wanted it to feel comfy, cozy and casual- with a Southern Rustic vibe. Last week I shared my progress which was mostly shopping the house – and to date I had spent $34.35. Ooooh- is the suspense on whether I stayed under budget just killing you? ๐Ÿ™‚

I wanted to update the space to make it cozy and comfortable and with a “Southern Rustic” vibe. This was my mood board to get me going on the room…

This was such a fun challenge for me and I am so glad I joined. A big thanks again to Erin for putting this together. It was just the motivation I needed to stay focused and actually finish a room in a month! And even better for having to be as resourceful as possible repurposing things I already had.

OK- so let’s take a look at the room now.

OK, let’s break it down. Starting with the shelves. Oh, the shelves. Last week I mentioned how much trouble I was having styling the shelfies.  These things proved to be the hardest area of the room for me. I am still not 100% pleased with them but they are “good enough”.

I will continue to tweak these over time because I do think shelves are a “process”.  My favorite part of the shelves is the collected driftwood from our beach trips. Oh, and I am super happy that Mr. Moose found a home at Peach Valley.

Painted books for the win! In all serious, these were my saving grace when it came to styling these shelves. I snagged an entire stack of books my mom had in her donation pile and gave them a coat of paint in cream and white. I wrote a post on this awhile back, you can read it here.

OK, now moving to the other side of the room. This room started with a gray sectional and a glass top sofa table. It was literally an empty slate!  Now there is some fern DIY art, a driftwood mirror, new lamps, a side table, new throw pillows and a fun leather tufted ottoman.

Are you wondering how anyone could do all of this for under $100?!?!?!?

Here you can see how since I floated the sectional to create a more cozy space, I can now hide the boys Anywhere Chairs behind the couch when we are not using them. Functional and more organized! Yay.

These lampshades started out aqua and white chevron and they were $2 a piece. I just gave them three coats of regular house paint I had on hand and now they are a lovely neutral gray. And I bought that sofa table before I was married and it  started out with a glass top. I just had a piece of birch plywood cut and stained it to update the look for more of the Southern Rustic look I wanted.

This mirror is EVERYTHING. (oh and it cost nothing) I shared last week, but this was actually a driftwood wreath from Restoration Hardware that I bought several years ago. AND I actually had this old mirror and it was just dumb luck that they fit together. Yay for happy accidents!

Don’t you just want to come in and watch a movie? Bring some popcorn!

The leather ottoman and side table were two of the bigger purchases for this room. But let me tell you that the grand total for both was under $36. Please don’t hate me. ๐Ÿ™‚

I just love how the casters on the legs of the ottoman really elevate the style factor with the super casual sectional, but still adds to the entire cozy and comfortable goal. Oh, and that side table with the crackle top finish and the fun carved legs was SUCH a fun score from the thrift store for around $23 and also adds lots of good texture and breaks up the sea of gray.

This room is chock-ful-of DIY projects and I hope to circle back and share some tutorials with you. My favorite is these DIY Moss Balls. For $2 I made a whole pile of them and I think they are so fun shoved in various baskets and vases. I will definitely be making more of these ASAP!

Another DIY was On the other side of the room. I did a quick superhero photo shoot and captured the boys being boys. Then I printed it from Kinkos on Engineer Paper for around $4 and used a frame I had.

More shelfie love!

My parents played a huge role in helping me pull this room off so a big thanks to them! And even down to the wire this past weekend when I knew I needed a few more accessories for the shelves,  I may or may not have shopped their house for a few odds and ends. Hey- you gotta do what you gotta do! ๐Ÿ™‚

I am so happy that I can now actually curl up in here and relax with my family and not be making a mental list of all of the things that need to be addressed.  (please tell me I am not the only one that does this?)

So let’s see if I was able to stretch that Benjamin and pull this off for under $100….

After another week of working on the space and adding the finishing touches- the finished room came to a whopping $97.93. VICTORY! If you are wondering how I pulled this off for $97.93, let’s take a closer look:

  • Fill and style the built in bookshelves = $15

xoxo-

Heather

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what you did to this room! I agree styling shelves is a process and sometimes you just need to step back, take a break and re-tweak! You painted books!?! Amazing idea and one that I might borrow for my front foyer – any tips?

Girrrrl!! This is incredible! So smart to float your sectional. I’m always needing nooks and crannies to hide kid crap! Your shelves look great…the middle one is my favorite. You know you’ll be zhushing them down the road anyways, but for now – they are DONE! Art looks great too ๐Ÿ˜‰ love.
