Southern State of Mind Blog by Heather

Guest Room Refresh

in Lifestyle on 01/23/17

*This post was sponsored by Kohl’s, and I received the included furniture and home décor as compensation, but the opinions and habit of naming myself CMO is all me.

One of the first things I wanted to tackle around the house this year was carving out a designated work space for our CMO -Chief Mom Officer. (um, yes, that would be ME!) Since we do not have a designated office in this house, I have been floating around for the past three years trying to run the household and blog from random spots all over the place. Which means I mostly end up on the kitchen counter. And that I am unorganized when it comes to paying bills, blogging and staying productive in general. I cannot believe how much of a difference this little change has made when it comes to my productivity!

About a year ago, I claimed a closet in the basement to become my office.  This “cloffice” is perfect for me to organize all of my craft supplies and I do use this little nook quite often when I am in the creative and crafting zone.  But with a 5 and 2 year old, I still need to be accessible and have at least one eye on them at all times. So it isn’t very practical for me to hop down to the cloffice when I want to check emails or do a little work.  (It’s no secret around here that I typically work in lots of 10-15 minute increments. Hey, I take what I can get.)

So I have decided it is high time for me to claim a spot on our main living level and the guest room is the most logical spot. For those of you that have been around here long, you know that this room was originally our formal dining room. When I got pregnant with Sweet B, we needed an additional bedroom and while this Southern girl loves a formal dining room, it really never got used except for holidays and a few dinner parties.

So we had it enclosed and now it is our Guest Room. This was one of the best decisions we have ever made when it comes to making our house work best for us. YES- I do miss our dining room, particularly around the holidays. But we use this guest bedroom almost daily for life so it is a trade off that works for our family.

I spent some time before the holidays decluttering this space. It had become the Christmas staging area, wrapping room and general dump zone. Since we had guests coming, I needed to clean it out and spruce it up. I also shopped the house and gave it a new look with some drapes I had and linens. I also removed the gallery wall because I just wanted white space in this room.

And I immediately felt better about life. 🙂

Once the room was decluttered, it was time to carve out the CMO’s office area. First order of business was getting a new chair. I went with the HomeVance Beverly Solid Arm Chair from Kohl’s. It immediately upped the look of the room and I love that it is a functional chair to work from, but also great for when guests come over. The gray color is perfect with the neutral navy, brown and gray color scheme.

I am still on the look out for a desk for this room. I want something with a little storage for function, but that is very petite and looks pretty. For now I have been using the dresser which has worked well but definitely not ideal long term.

Overall, this little change is already making a huge difference in my productivity. I can sit down and knock out my 15 minutes of work whenever I have a few extra minutes, keep one eye on the littles and not have to clear the kitchen island every time I need to open my laptop.

If you don’t already have a designated work space I highly recommend it! And be sure to check out Kohl’s upcoming sale if you need to refresh an area of your home to kick off the year right!

xoxo-

Heather

I have a desk and I set up shop at the eat in kitchen table or at the formal dining room table. Never at the desk. Go figure.

Ha. The dining room table is a great option though too! Mine was on our bar which really didn’t work since that is where EVERYTHING goes.

Thanks. This CMO really has become SO much more organized with this change. I am not sure how I even had a method to any of the madness before!
