It’s been quite a while since I’ve shared a 20 Minute Organizing post around here- guess I haven’t been in the organizing mood! But today I am finally back with a freshly organized space- the laundry room closet. This summer was wild when it came to traveling and our laundry room experienced an endless cycle of unpacking dirty clothes and packing up for the next trip. One day among the mound of dirty clothes I opened my laundry room closet I decided even though there was laundry to deal with, it was HIGH TIME to deal with this closet too! So right then and there I decided to pull everything out of the closet and see if I couldn’t whip this space into shape to work better for me!
ummmm…. look at this…
Now, this is one of those times where I can’t believe I share this kind of stuff on the internet. But I like to keep it real and you just have to get the full before effect to understand why it was an emergency situation. Clearly it had been months (YEARS?!?!? NEVER?!??!?) since I had stopped to organize this closet.
OK, so let’s take a quick inventory:
- a lava lamp
- mismatched sheets
- a web of pillowcases
- broken moose head
- crib sheets (my youngest is 7)
- bags bags and more bags
Welp.
Alright, so I think we can all agree it can only go up from here! So let’s take a look at the after. What I did to organize definitely wasn’t anything groundbreaking but that is the point of these 20 Minute Organizing posts. They are just to ignite organizing mojo for you to deal with a space that you have ignored in 20 minutes or less! I also tried to use baskets and bins that I had but will likely upgrade a few zones in the future when I find the right pieces.
Ahhhh- SO MUCH BETTER!
The pods got dumped into a glass canister and labeled using my new handy label maker.
I got rid of about half of the sheets (seriously how many extra sets do you really need?) and folded complete sets together using a matching pillowcase as an “envelope”. This way I can easily pull an entire set right off the shelf that is ready when I need it. The two extra pillows also have clean pillowcases and can be pulled for guests or sleepovers for the boys.
The two brown baskets fit perfectly and one holds kids twin sheets and pillowcases and the other is a donation bin as I find things to donate. I added a little shelf to hold pillowcases (also tossed a bunch of old ones) as well as a small tool kit I created to store some tools upstairs such as a tape measure and screwdriver.
Once it was all cleared out and organized, I rewarded myself with a fun new toy- this label maker! I made lots of labels for this closet and the boys and I have been busy labeling everything we can think of! #newfamilyhobby
If you are interested- here is the direct link to the label maker.
Alright- I hope you are inspired to tackle a space in your own home. It’s CRAZY how much joy this closet brings me now when I open it! And don’t worry- the lava lamp is safe and sound in it’s new home!

Right? And how many times did I look at it over the past couple years and completely ignore it? Glad to have this space organized now!
