Southern State of Mind Blog by Heather

Front Porch Coffee Talk

in Front Porch Coffee Talk on 09/11/20

Hello hello from the ATL and happy Friday!   It’s time for another Front Porch Coffee Talk, where we get to pretend we are sitting on the front porch together just chatting about whatever is on our minds. So grab your coffee and let’s chat!  Today I am wearing my NYC hat in honor and remembrance of September 11th. Those of you that know me personally already know that 19 years ago today I was a senior at UGA and my boyfriend (now husband) was in a training class for his shiny new job on the 62nd floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Fortunately, his crazy tale is one that he lived to tell. This year, when we have our moment of silence not only will I remember all of the heroes from that day, it will feel even more important as we navigate this pandemic. These are the two most historic periods in my life and certainly ones that we will never forget.

NEVER FORGET

It’s hard to believe that 9/11 was nearly two decades and half of my lifetime ago. This past December we took the boys to the 9/11 Memorial when we visited NYC and it was nice to be able to show them these hallowed grounds and help them connect the place to the event. While we still cannot watch the documentaries that they replay every year on this day,  I thought the memorial was very well done and it is worth checking out if you haven’t yet (once we can all travel again).  You can read our Christmas New York City trip recap here.

HAPPY 70th TO DAD

He’s the best and yesterday he turned 70. He may not be interested in Target hauls and what to wear to the Kentucky Derby- but he is still my most loyal blog reader and I am so thankful for his unwavering support! He’s our very own MacGyver and his love language is fixing things. He’s always willing to lend a hand – last spring he came to our house every Thursday to help me around the house on projects. Am I a lucky girl or what?! And he’s even currently helping me with the $100 Lego Nook. Happy Birthday Dad/Opa!

FALL FRONT PORCH SNEAK PEAK

I’ve been working on my early fall home tour for Monday’s post… and couldn’t resist sharing this little sneak peak shot of our front porch. Any bets on how long I can keep those planters alive?

CUTE WHITE TOP

I’ve been living in this white lightweight button down blouse. I love how it ties in the front and has the longer layer in the back that I wear untucked. It’s cute over a maxi or with jeans and a great basic staple. That white bracelet stack is another item I have been wearing nonstop- would make a great little gift too!

KINDERGARTEN MOM LUNCH

We figured it was high time for a celebratory kindergarten mom lunch after paying our dues for the past six months… make that six years. Hard to believe we sent our babies off to kindergarten… but hey- we might as well enjoy our freedom!  In all honestly, it has been quite an adjustment having them both in school, especially after being together for so long this summer. But I do think I could get used to this. 🙂

CURRENTLY READING

I started this book “Younger Next Year” and I have found it very fascinating! The premise is all about becoming functionally younger by following a few simple rules. Spoiler Alert- the rules are pretty simple. While it is written for ladies about 10-20 years older than me, I am finding it very inspiring and informative. There is definitely lots of medical/ science explained about how it all works, which is boring and I have been skimming over- but overall it is a great motivator to KEEP EXERCISING! And a reminder that I AM IN CHARGE OF MY OWN HEALTH.

SNAPSIE APP

My friend told me about this Snapsie app and I am so happy she did! If you are tracking your workout progress pictures – this is a simple and free tool that keeps them stored by the date and in an organized folder. It also gives you a guide to take a picture so that your pictures can look the same each week to get the best progress shots possible!  I am a dork I have been taking weekly progress shots of my arms so this app is giving me all kinds of joy. Hey, whatever it takes to stay motivated, right?!

FITNESS DIARY- WEEK THREE UPDATE

If you missed it, I shared my 12 Week Fitness Goals Challenge last week and now it has been three weeks.  Here you can see my Week Three Tracker… we traveled for Labor Day and it really through me off so I am hoping that next week I can get back on track.

Week Three Update:

  • Arm Workout 4 times = DONE (12/48 times of my 12 week goal)
  • Pilates Video 4 times = DONE (12/48 times of my 12 week goal)
  • 1o Miles Walking Per Week- 10.25 miles DONE (35.35/120 miles of my 12 week goal)
  • Intermittent Fasting = 5 days

Reflections:

  • Labor Day weekend set me back a bit, but I am glad I still got a few walks in while we were at the lake.
