No Mudroom? No Problem! Our Makeshift Mudroom

in Lifestyle on 09/12/13

I think everyone would agree that having a dedicated
“mudroom” in your home would be amazing.
Like, what-dreams-are-made-of-amazing.
If you are like me, you would also agree that there
is an amazing amount of clutter that
comes through your door every day.
Bags, purses, briefcases, coats.
Oh, and where do you put gifts for upcoming birthday parties?
 Gloves? Hats?
Things to return?
Where do these live in your home with no official place to drop them?
In ours, it was the kitchen island.
This. Drove. Me. Crazy.
Since we had no dedicated space in our house for these things,
I had to create an official drop spot!
Once we decide to turn our formal dining room into our home office,
it just made perfect sense to add cubbies.
And when we found these Ballard Entry Lockers,
it was amazing.
Like, what-dreams-are-made-of-amazing. 🙂
We found ours at the local Ballard Design Backroom Outlet.
There are few dings and dents, but nothing you can really see.
Although we rarely use our front door for coming and going,
the proximity to the front door makes sense visually
and this little nook is a very central location in our house.
Best part? It was completely unused space before!
Three people, three cubbies.
We each get our own little 4’x 2′ space!
How do you control the clutter?
Are you fortunate to have an official mudroom?
Or did you come up with a makeshift mudroom like me?
And just because it is fun to dream, here are a few amazing mudrooms!
Add it to the “dream-house” wish list!

I created a mud room area in our garage, which is the entrance into our home that we use the most. It has a six foot long low shelving unit for the two million pair of shoes, cleats, and boots that we seem to have. There are also hooks for baseball bags and football gear as well as tennis gear and my gardening gloves and clogs. My laundry room is immediately to the right as you come in from the garage, perfect for dumping dirty sports uniforms or practice jerseys. I would love to have something "pretty" but I am happy with how functional mine is.

Wow! That sounds amazing! And so perfect right next to the laundry room! We don't have the cleats and sports gear yet, I dread the day of figuring out where that will go!

I live in a bungalow so no mud room but we do have an armoire near our front door that is slowly turning into a small mud closet. Now to teach my hubby to use it and not pile everything on our dining room table is a different story….

Ha, yes. Baby steps!!! 🙂 My husband is actually really good about putting his stuff in there, but I just go in about once a month and clean it up. It tends to get overrun with bags, coats, and misc.

Looks great and I am sure it will come in so handy. Where did you get the rug in your office? I love how it looks with the desk etc.

Heather I am catching up on post and now reading all about the office and rug info. Disregard my question. Ok back to getting caught up.

    Cheers!

Hey Jordan! Thanks for your note- I see you saw the posting where I said it was from Rugs USA. Got it for a steal during one of their sales! http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-contemporary-zebra-print-with-faux-silk-highlights/grey/200ZF5-76096.html

Your cubbies are super fabulous Heather! And I am majorly drooling over those spacious mudrooms. We have more of a hallway then a mudroom – I dream of cubbies!! Thanks for sharing it at Work it Wednesday this week. Pinned!!

I have a decent size foyer but the front door is rarely used for entering the home. Since we have side loading garage that stairs lead to the kitchen, everyone comes directly into my kitchen, which drives me nuts! There is no way possible to make an area in the kitchen but love the idea of building a mudroom in the garage. We are also considering moving the door inside garage over 4 feet and it would then enter into the laundry room which is a 10X9 room that I could easily add awesome lockers like this too and have a mudroom. Moving an exterior door is not something we feel comfortable doing DIY, so dream the day we prioritize moving this door so I can have a mudroom! Your idea was so very creative and clever for unused space. We have a formal dining we never use as well… an office would be nice there!

I hear you on the entrance into the kitchen, I can imagine bags and shoes end up everywhere! Sounds like you have some great options- the garage or the more "brave" laundry room! Good luck and keep me posted if you do anything!
