{On The Road Again} Hilton Head Island

in Lifestyle, The South, travel on 07/30/15

Hi there! Is summer whizzing by for everyone else? Seriously, I feel like I am still in the thick of it and WHOMP WHOMP it’s all about back to school everywhere I turn. I am holding on to every last minute of it though and we are enjoying our time at the beach with my parents. I can’t believe we have already been here a week. I guess time flies when you’re a beach bum.

Before summer gets away from us I wanted to share some of the highlights of our trip to Hilton Head last month. It was a great time despite the fact that we were there during some crazy high temperatures. Seriously, it was like the heater was blasting you every time you stepped outdoors, but that didn’t stop us from soaking in everything Hilton Head has to offer.

Hilton Head Trip Recap
Hilton Head has become a tradition and this was the fifth time Brian and I have been to Hilton Head together. He grew up visiting every summer so we have our routine down pretty good by now. This trip was extra fun because Brian’s mom came along to help with the boys and his brother and fiance joined us as well. We stayed in Shipyard Plantation in the Port O’Call condos, a three bedroom close to the pool and tennis courts.

First things first, we rent bikes for the week. They are delivered to our place and ready for us when we arrive. Anything that is turn-key like that is a no-brainer in my book. It was nice to enjoy our first bike ride as a family of four and we had fun exploring the plantation. The entire Island is really bike friendly with lots of paths. But does anything beat a bike ride on the beach? I don’t think so.

Each morning the hubby and his brother would play golf. (I am still not sure what is fun about playing golf when it’s 150 degrees but I digress.) During Sweet B’s nap, I would take Sweet P to the beach on the bike so he could dig for treasure. He would literally do this ALL. DAY. if he could!

Once the big boys were done with golf we would hit the pool or beach. I think I lived in this hat and a braid all week. #beachhairdontcare

I loved hitting the beach but I must admit it is quite an undertaking schlepping all of the gear. That said, the boys really do love the sand and I am fully convinced that sand & shovels are a better combination than peanut butter & chocolate.

One of the highlights for Sweet P was a pirate excursion. Y’all. He ate this up and STILL talks about how he got to shoot water at the Stinky Pete the Pirate.  I HIGHLY recommend this little outing if you have a little that enjoys pirates. Or boats. Or treasure. It’s a perfect trifecta if they enjoy all three!

But the little guy isn’t the only one that got to enjoy some outings. Thanks to having Brian’s mom come along, we even managed a few date nights. One of the new restaurants we tried was called Skullhouse Boat Dock where we sat outside and enjoyed the sunset.

I kind of felt like I was living in a Dawson’s Creek episode. 🙂
While we enjoyed a nice evening out without the kids, this place was super kid friendly and we will definitely go back with the boys.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a beach trip without me taking in some of the nature I adore. Hilton Head graces us with it’s Spanish Moss and I just love the way it makes the entire plantation feel magical.

Of course, I came home with an armload of driftwood again this year… and some new treasures also made a trip home. I do have oyster hysteria after all.

Well, that was our week in a nutshell. Lot’s of sand and sun and family.  I am already hopeful that we will be back next year! I just can’t get enough! I would love to know if we missed anything in Hilton Head that we should check out next year. Do tell!

xoxo-
Heather

We go to HHI every year and have since I was little…it's changed so much since then! We always stay in SeaPines–their new beach club is to die for! You should definitely head over there for a drink one night with your husband. We also rent bikes and a trail ride at Lawton Stables is always on the list for me and my daughter while my husband and son golf. Head to Harbour Town one night to hear Greg Russell if that isn't already a tradition! XO, Christy
