Spruce Up Your Kitchen- No Sew Valance

in Lifestyle on 01/26/15

This week I am going to share five cheap and pretty ways to spruce up your kitchen. If you are like us, you spend about 85% of your waking time at home in your kitchen. And when you entertain, it’s where people end up gathering, am I right? So why not take a few minutes this week and give it some love.

I am not talking about a new backsplash or new appliances here peeps. I am talking a few minutes and a few bucks.

Super simple ideas that anyone can do!

First up, I am going to show you how I added a no-sew curtain above our sink. No sew you ask? Yes, I used my hot glue gun. (My mother is probably cringing as she reads this! Sorry mom!) Although it’s not my favorite thing to do, I am not afraid of a sewing machine. However, I don’t own one. My mom, who taught me how to sew, has one and she is kind enough to let me borrow hers when I need it.

But since I didn’t want to wait to get my hands on her sewing machine, I just pulled out my hot glue gun.

When there is a will there is a WAY!

As I was purging last week, I ended up getting side tracked and made a few updates to our kitchen. It wasn’t a bad thing actually because I ended up helping the purge pile. You see, I had this fabric sitting in my stash. I can’t remember what I originally bought it for (it’s from Hobby Lobby), but it was just going to waste sitting on a shelf. I also had a tension rod that I previously used in the nursery. So for me, this project was free. For you, it may cost $10-$15.(tension rod is about $6, and depending on the fabric you choose the price will vary.)

To rewind a bit, here was my kitchen window before:

And here it is with the new valance. I love how much color it adds to the kitchen.

To make, you just need a panel of fabric. Mine was already actually the perfect length to fit in the window so all it needed was a good ironing. Just measure how much you need and how far down you want it to hang.
TIP: hang the rod as high as you can- this will make your window look bigger and allow as much light as possible to come in.

To glue the sides, I just ironed about of inch of fabric back to make a little crease. Then I fired up the glue gun and went to town gluing down the folded panel. I found that doing it small increments was the easiest way to avoid the glue from hardening.
As far as how I got it onto the rod, I just laid the tension rod on the fabric and glued around it to make a pocket/sleeve around the rod.
Y’all, I made this in the amount of time it took my little to watch ONE episode of a Jake and the Neverland Pirates. That’s about 22 minutes for any of you non-toddler-moms out there! 🙂
If you don’t have cabinets like me flanking your sink, you could use a curtain rod, command hooks, or just thumback this above your window.
We are not going for perfection here people. Remember- cheap and fast!
Sure, I could have spent more time- picking out fabric, cutting, sewing, measuring, hemming…
but for a 22 minute project, I think it makes a huge impact to our kitchen.
I’ll be back tomorrow with another simple suggestion to spruce up your kitchen.
xoxo-
Heather

What a huge difference it makes in your kitchen, Heather! Pinned it to my window treatments board. I adore my glue gun, too–it's so versatile. XOXO, Christy
