It’s no secret that we take tacos very seriously around here! So I am not sure why I haven’t shared more Mexican food inspired posts before- but that changes today! I am excited to start a new series called TACO TUESDAY. (How original, I know… ha ha.) But why mess up a good thing? Since we can’t go out to eat to our favorite Mexican restaurants, I figured now would be a great time to share our favorites at home. Today we will start with a building block to lots of yummy recipes- a homemade taco seasoning. I typically go through a couple packets of store-bought taco seasoning a week. And don’t get me wrong- it is super convenient and delicious. But have you ever read the ingredients and looked at the sodium?
I’ll wait. Go take a look.
Crazy how much sodium, right? Even my low-sodium packets still has a lot. And in some packets, there are some ingredients that I can’t even pronounce.
I decided to finally give a homemade version a try and now I am questioning why it took me so long. I read through a bunch of recipes online, but I was drawn to this one as it just seemed the simplest. I’ve now used this with ground beef and also used this as a rub on some shredded crock-pot chicken and it was a great addition for flavor.
HOMEMADE TACO SEASONING RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup Ground Cumin
1/4 cup Garlic Powder
1/4 cup Chili Powder
1/4 cup Onion Powder
4 tbsp Crushed Red Pepper
DIRECTIONS- Homemade Taco Seasoning
Mix all ingredients together! I stored mine in a large leftover spice container in my spice drawer, and made a custom label. (why yes, I did organize my spice drawer during this pandemic ordeal!) This recipe yields about 1.25 cups of seasoning which is approximately 10 packets of store bought taco seasoning.
Taco Seasoning Packet Equivalent
A taco seasoning mix packet contains about two tablespoons. This homemade taco seasoning might be a little bit stronger than store bought (particularly if you use a lot of crushed red pepper) so you might want to use just a little less to start. Adjust amounts to your preference!
Happy Taco Tuesday my friends! I am really looking forward to sharing this series with you, because I sure miss heading out to my fave Mexican restaurants!
xoxo-
