Hello hello! I think we are all still smiling from ear-to-ear from our spring break family ski trip. That is, now that we have caught up on our sleep! I can’t wait to share a trip recap today about our recent family ski trip to Whitefish, Montana. Last year, we were lucky to be able to get our first family ski trip in right before the pandemic hit and I shared our entire ski trip to Deer Valley Utah details here. We loved Deer Valley but it was super fun to check out a new destination this year! We also paired up with another family with two young boys which added the extra fun element of making it feel like sleepaway camp in their bunk room.
WHERE TO STAY:
We stayed in a VRBO that was ski in/ ski out to the ski resort. Let me tell you, with four boys under the age of nine- the convenience was a life saver! The beautiful thing about the Whitefish ski mountain is that it is only about 30 minutes from the Kalispell airport.
View from our VRBO window! That is the base lodge – so convenient!
WHERE TO EAT:
We were there for 7 nights and did a mix of cooking in, ordering take out and a few meals out.
The Last Chair Kitchen & Bar – Superb menu and perfect for take out.
Hellroaring Saloon- This is the perfect Après Ski destination located on the ski mountain. Love the vibe in here. Must get the nachos and a pitcher of Kokanee!
Cafe Kandahar- Get a sitter and enjoy some fine dining. This place is like taking a step back in time.
Boat Club Restaurant at Whitefish Lodge– The boys loved being able to walk out on the frozen lake and sit near the fire pits. Great cocktails and food.
Pigggyback BBQ- We loaded up on take out and were able to eat dinner and lunch for leftovers the next day.
Loula’s Cafe– Breakfast spot in the downtown area.
Jalisco Cantina- Cute Mexican spot and kid friendly!

WHAT TO DO:
Ski: Obviously this is the main event in winter! We skied at Whitefish Resort also known as The Big Mountain. It was the most beautiful skiing I have ever enjoyed! The boys did a mix of private lessons and ski school and we also used an instructor. We loved every single person on the staff that we encountered.
Whitefish Lake: Right at the bottom of the mountain, it’s a fun dinner destination and the boys loved walking out on the frozen lake.
Dog Sledding: We planned a non-ski day mid week and everyone was excited to do some dog sledding. Unfortunately our boys had a nit of a stomach bug that morning so we had to stay bag. The family we were with did it and loved it!
Snowshoeing: On the list for next year!
Glacier National Park: We did not venture to Glacier as we plan to visit in the summer. However, on a blue sky day the views into Glacier National Park are BREATHTAKING from the Big Mountain!
Downtown Whitefish: Great restaurants and cute little shops. If you want to take a break from skiing, this is a fun outing and not far from the ski mountain.
WHAT TO PACK:
We were there the first week of March and the weather ranged from gray skies and snow to blue skies and warm! I love that we got to experience the range of weather and even on the cold days, I was comfortable and enjoyed it! I did share a recap on my Amazon Ski Clothes– spoiler alert- they were GREAT!
