DIY Galvanized Curtain Rods

in BOY MOM, create, Easy DIY, Lifestyle on 05/30/14

Yesterday, I shared the DIY Playful, Modern and Mom Approved curtains that I made for the Big Boy Room. Of course, the look wouldn’t truly be playful and modern without a fun curtain rod, right?!?!

So I went in search for a playful, long, (10 FOOT!) and affordable curtain rod, with the vision of an industrial pipe. It didn’t take long to find these super fun industrial curtain rods at West Elm. I was immediately smitten!

However, I was quickly bummed at the price tag. I mean come on, I adore my child, but really don’t want to spend $100 bucks on a curtain rod for his room! Now you know, I have definitely taken the plunge when it comes to West Elm purchases with my chandelier and striped shower curtain, but this one seemed pretty DIY-able.

Yep, sure enough all I had to do was a little online searching and found some pretty amazing knock offs (like this– with some great tips too on how to get the parts even cheaper).

Come on, if these girls could do it, I could do it too!

This was such an easy DIY and cost a fraction of what it would have cost to purchase these! Just a quick trip to Home Depot and I had my supplies:

~Supplies~
Curtain Rod: 1 each 1/2″ wide pipe
(I went with 10 feet because I knew I wanted these to cover most of the wall- but the sizes at Home Depot vary. BONUS- the guys in the orange vest can actually cut any custom size you need!)
This is what mounts to the wall: 2 each 1/2″ floor flanges
This attaches the flange with the elbow: 2 each 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ nipples
This is attaches the nipple with the flange: 2 each 1/2″ 90-degree elbows
Wall Anchors: these babies are heavy
Beer:  1 each for your husband while installing

Installation is definitely a two person job, and I laid on some extra charm to convince the honey to install after work one night.
Oh and a beer helped too! 🙂

But the finished product is exactly what I had envisioned!

This room is almost done! So what do you think?

My kind of plumbing, XOXO-
Heather

They look fantastic, and are surely something a boy's room will carry well into the teen years.

I love the rod with the polka dot curtains and how the curtain fabric goes with the pillows and even the sock monkeys. I'd like to see the whole room so I'm going to look at the curtain post you mentioned to see if you show more.

Love the finished look here, Heather! You're empowering me to take on my own galvanized pipe curtain rods. So hot right now!

Looks great and exactly what I want, however if you used drapes with gromets alone, would you be able to take them down to wash the drapes?
