Southern State of Mind Blog by Heather

Feeling Blue (as in navy)

in Lifestyle on 02/14/14

Happy Valentines Day! Any fun plans? Mr SSOM have a quiet date night planned at home.

What a week we have had here at the SSOM household!
First, we found out on Monday that we were having another little guy! After the shock of being told I would be a mom to two Little Misters, we got snowed in. Yep, the past 3 days have been spent snuggling, eating, and doing whatever we can to keep ourselves busy. (and yes, that includes dance parties) I had to squeeze in some work too, but it felt like I got bonus time with the family and for that I am always grateful!

So, while most people will be talking about red and hearts today, I am more in the mood to chat about BLUE! Maybe it’s the snowy weather, or maybe it’s the news of the Little Mister this week, but I am just feeling the need to talk about my love of blue.

Blue has become my “go-to” color the past couple years. Really, navy blue.

I always get a smile when I see the new Pottery Barn catalog peering through the bills and junk mail.

Not because I buy much from PB, mostly because I love the way they style rooms and always get a nugget or two of inspiration for my own home.

When I saw the cover of the most recent catalog, I knew I would swoon over what was on the inside. You see, a couple years ago I got hit with the Navy bug, or what they are calling “Indigo”. Before that, I was a Robin’s egg blue gal. But there is just something so classic, so timeless and so versatile about Indigo.

I love using blue in tablesettings. I  borrowed those blue and white dishes from my mom. She is the QUEEN of blue and white dishes. Like mother, like daughter? I have picked up various blue dishes and vases from the thrift store, and I love to mix and match them.

These navy blue trellis pillows from Target have been so versatile and the perfect navy addition to pretty much any room! Seriously, I think I have used them in every room in the house at one point or another. They were $10 each and started out as outdoor pillows. Wishing I would have bought more!

I was hesitant about putting such bold navy ikat drapes in the living room…

but three years later, I still heart them. Alot. And that navy blue and white garden stool? $25 bucks from Garden Ridge. I wasn’t sure about it when I bought it, and figured I would paint it, but I love the way the blue patterns mix in the living room.

So what about you, do you have a love affair with the color blue? Any fun blue pieces in your home that just seem to work anywhere? What is your “go-to” color?
Happy weekend everyone! Let’s hope spring is going to show up soon!

I love blue too. Years ago (ok more like a decade) I bought blue dishes from Pier 1 and other places so blue has been a theme for me since. I was going to do navy in my son's room but went grey with touches of it. It's also throughout my house and I'd love to add more as I can. My aunt is the queen of blue and white dishes too, using them to make a statement wall in her house with them as art.

I just love blue and am excited that now it has been "trendy" there will be more in the stores to choose from! My home office, my master bedroom and my master bath are all blue and white. The rest of my house has a lot of neutrals but the blues make me the happiest. I love all your beautiful pieces by the way!

Oh Heather you know how much I love BLUE! I'm so happy that the Pottery Barn is finally bringing it back. It just draws me! I love my blue bottle tree in the back yard with my blue hydrangeas. I'm so glad you like blue too!
When you open my kitchen cupboards…all you see is cobalt blue and white! LOVE!
    Love you!

Never blue about blue! I love it in all shades. We have a grey base in the bigger rooms in the house and most of the accents are navy whether it be window treatments or the paint in the hallway. We are super close to buying a new house and almost every idea that I've looked at lately involves some shade of blue (mostly navy). I love your taste!!!

I've always loved blue too! Navy is one of my go to neutrals and it can be great in winter with greys and then pop in spring in summer when mixed with lighter blues and turquiose. Love all of the blue you have going on!

I've still got my navy furniture from 1990. The furniture is a bit worn, but I've never tired of the color. And I've got lots of blue & white transferware, too. I love all your indigo accents! Oh, and I've got yards and yards of ikat fabric waiting to be turned into window treatments. Love your curtains!
