Southern State of Mind Blog by Heather

When the Baby Boy’s Away, the Momma Will Play!

in Lifestyle on 07/01/13

Mr. Big Stuff went to “Camp Oma & Opa”
yesterday so this momma had some fun!
Let me back up a minute.
My parents took our little man to the beach with them for the next couple days and we will be meeting them for the long holiday weekend. When they came to pick him up, he was all – See Ya Mom! See Ya Dad! Beach or Bust! It makes me so happy that he is so comfortable with them!

As I waved them goodbye, it felt strange to come into the house knowing that when I put his toys away, they would stay put away for the next 4 days.
So, I did something I have been wanting to do for about a year and a half…
I made our living room an adult room again.

Now, you may be saying to yourself-
So what, that doesn’t look like big changes? But if you have ever had a toddler around you know that accessories are packed up and replaced with toys, books and my personal favorite, the toy lawn mower!?!?!

Now, I realize this is short lived, but it felt great to accessorize with things other than fire trucks, trains and match box cars.

Aw, hello cute pillows on the couch. I’ve missed you.

Tray with flowers on the ottoman, where have you been all my life?

Books neatly stacked on the end table? Much better!

Birch logs in fire place? YES, PLEASE!

And Bella of course enjoyed being the “only child”!

It felt great to transform my room to an adult space
to enjoy the next couple days!

But I wouldn’t trade in the toys and chaos for anything…
Have fun at the beach Mr. Big Stuff!
We’ll see you in a few days!

Awwww memories…I remember those days. All my pretties were five feet high and on one giant entertainment center…that couldn't be knocked over by a 2 year man child who was constantly trying out for the Dallas Cowboys "most tackled division"…LOL

Your living room is gorgeous! Love the colors and patterns you chose, really sweet.

Thanks Tori! You must be as obsessed with pillows as me!!! The brown pillows are from a store in Florida a couple years ago. The yellow chevron are from Homegoods. The navy trellis are from Target last year. The "M" on navy is from Ballard Designs outlet. The black and white stripe was made by me with fabric from Premier Prints. The brown and yellow chevron is from a local store here in Atlanta.

Hello! I just found your blog via Between Naps on the Porch and absolutely love this room! I have a 4 year old daughter and a boy on the way so I feel ya on the craziness that is toddler town! As I type, my tv room is overflowing with her toys and I wonder "where are the baby items going to go?" I need a few days with her away to organize and throw some things away. I just wish I had your talent of mixing patterns and some of your items…ok, maybe all of it. ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks Megan. I hope you can find some time to feel organized before your little man comes along! It is true- they require so much stuff! Toddler town will be back next week so I will be packing up the pillows and books for trains. Have fun! My advice is to just go for it when mixing patterns- it is surprising what may come together just using things you have!

Beautiful family room! Enjoy your quiet time…it is nice to have some "me time" to regroup and catch up on some things. My kids are heading to the beach with my husband on Wednesday and as much as I will miss them, I will also enjoy knowing that everything will be exactly where I left it…my scissors will not disappear, my tweezers will not walk to the kids' bathroom, my cell phone charger will not fly itself to the media room…have a wonderful few days!!!

Isn't it amazing how much stuff these little people come with??? Your grown-up room is very pretty! Where did you find your zebra print rug? I love it!

So pretty!! I love your drapes and all the different patterns and colours that you have mixed so beautifully in the room. My throw pillows end up on the ground at least ten times a day thanks to my two year old. At least at five, my other one has outgrown that. But one day we will miss their busy little hands, I'm sure.

I love the bold bright graphic prints, you have mixed them effortlessly for a great look. How do you keep the white couch with a little one? I am dying to get a neutral sofa but with 3 toddler grandchildren and a messy husband I am scared! Love to know your secret?

Wow, what a beautiful space! I LOVE your color scheme! I have three young boys, so I totally understand where you're coming from. It is a tricky balance, having a nice, stylish home while allowing young kids to live. I'm still working on it. Thanks so much for sharing. Happy 4th of July to you!

I am so in love with those blue and white drapes! Please tell me where I can find those, or at least the fabric to make them if you did not buy them already made. Thanks!!!

Kristin- you won't believe it- those drapes were made from shower curtains I found on ebay!!! I have searched high and low for more of them, but unfortunately came up empty handed. I do know that the original inspiration fabric for me came from Calico Corners http://www.calicocorners.com/product/designer+fabrics+for+the+home/more+fabric+collections/ikat/kalah+blue.do Best of luck on your hunt!
