Is there anything more fun than getting fun mail?
Ok, Ok, Ok… so maybe it’s not the most fun thing,
but it sure does beat junk mail.
Or bills.
Last year, as I was opening cute Christmas cards, I realized I needed a spot to display all of the cards with pictures of the precious children and families we were receiving. So I grabbed an old shutter to hold my most favorite mail ever- Christmas Cards!
Long after the Christmas Cards came and went,
this still hangs in my kitchen.
Yep. Made this as a temporary Christmas card display. And today it is still being used for invitations, birth announcements and any other cute mail we receive.
It was just too cute to put away!
Thought I’d share it with you in case you come across a shutter between now and the holidays and want to make one for yourself!
If so, just grab a can of red spray paint, a staple gun and some quilt batting.
I used Rustoleum Colonial Red.
Then, I stapled quilt batting across the back to help give the cards something to slide into and not slip out the between the shutter slats.
You can see I didn’t spend alot of time figuring out where to staple. Just here and there. And then there and here. I am so scientific with my crafts. 🙂
I cut a strip of an old burlap coffee sac to make a “ribbon” and stapled it on the back as well.
Here was the before and after last Christmas with all of our Christmas cards.
And here it is today hanging out in the kitchen.
I use wooden clothespins to give it a little more charm.

How do you display your cute invites and birth announcements?
Please tell me it is not weird that I am already thinking about Christmas cards?

You're so clever.
Thanks girlie. When you get your place we are going to have so much fun!
This is so adorable! And its going to be great for Christmas! Another reason I'm glad I didn't throw away that shutter downstairs!
YES! Do not throw that shutter away. Sounds like a perfect trash to treasure?!?!? Hope your weekend is going great!
Aaahhh!!! Why can't I ever find old shutters??? This is super perfect for Christmas cards. Very cute the way you hung it with ribbon too!
Bummer! I know, my mom scored a pile and we are pretty much out at this point. Good luck on your search, may the dumpster diving powers be with you! LOL.
What a cute project! I love the color red!
Thanks for inspiring me today!

You are not weird to be thinking of Christmas already! As my mother and I were going through my grandmother's belongings I found a stack of the prettiest vintage Christmas cards. I'm racking my brain to think of a way to display them over the holidays. Your super cute shutter idea just might work!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Oh- those cards sound fantastic! A shutter sounds perfect! Thanks for stopping in Ashley!

Oh, i just love this! I love the red color too:)
Thanks Shannon! I chose red for the holiday, but it works all year! 🙂
such a great way to store your mail and love the photos! I may have to find a shutter to redo…
I linked over from the Work It Wednesday Link Party where I am participating too with Sympathy Card and Free Sympathy Cut File and Remember 911 card and would love it if you'd stop by.
Hugs, Antonella 🙂
Hi there! Thanks for stopping in and your sweet note!
You and your shutters! So clever! (And cute.) I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for shutters on the curb, so I can rescue them and use them to organize my jewelry, my mail, cards…whatevs! Thanks for the inspiration, Heather.
Warmly,

Thanks Lauren- yes! If you see a shutter do not leave it on the curb. I repeat- do NOT LEAVE IT ON THE CURB! 🙂 There is just so many things you can do to repurpose it!
LOVE it!! Have a serious crush on shutters right now… and have some waiting to be installed in my kitchen area too!!
Awesome! Can't wait to see how it turns out!
How did you attach the shutter to your cabinet? I would like to put mine in the same type of place in my kitchen, but don't want to permanently damage the cabinet wall. Any suggestions?
