DIY Magnolia Wreath for Fall

in Dollar Store Crafts, Easy DIY, Fall on 08/31/17

One of my very most viewed post and pinned project on Pinterest is a DIY Dollar Tree Magnolia Wreath I shared a few years back. I guess I am not the only one smitten with seeing those beautiful Magnolia leaves in my home. And it just gets better when you pair those beautiful leaves up with a one dollar foam wreath form to make a beautiful DIY Magnolia Wreath.

So I figured I would revisit this oldie but goodie this month for the “My Dollar Store DIY Series” project. If you are new around here, this is a fun series where a group of bloggers create a project each month centered around a seasonal theme. For August it is FALL! YAY! I love that I had an excuse to get the wheels spinning with fall decor.

This DIY Magnolia Wreath tutorial has a slight variation from the previous one I shared. While I used the same exact method, I reversed some of the leaves to show the brown to give it more of a fall feel.

If you have access to Magnolia leaves you will definitely want to try one of these out this fall. I also shared some tips below for ways to help this stay fresh longer.

Supplies Needed for this DIY Magnolia Wreath

  • Foam Wreath Form (from Dollar Tree)
  • Around 60-70 (pretty*) Magnolia Leaves (with brown backs*)

*and by pretty I mean, avoid those with the white or brown spots and look for the big green waxy ones!

**also, I found that not all Magnolia leaves have brown backs- some are green on the back. If yours are all green then by all means just make an all green wreath!

Yes, that is all you will need! And for all of you math majors that means this project cost one whole dollar. 🙂 Although an additional expense is having a way to hang it- I used some black buffalo check burlap ribbon I had on hand for mine.

OK- here we go!

STEP 1:

Grab the foam wreath form and approximately 60-70 Magnolia leaves in various sizes.

STEP 2:

Start adding a row of green leaves around the outer rim of the wreath form. You will want to use your large leaves for this. I just eyeball it and try to make it somewhat symmetrical. In order to get the stems of the leaves to poke into the foam form, I just snip the ends at an angle.

STEP 3:

Once you have your first row, add a second row working your way inside with the leaves in reverse so that they show the brown.

STEP 4:

Continue to add rows of leaves alternating them between the green side and the brown side. There is no real science to this but you just want to try to keep it somewhat symmetrical. When it comes to the center part, I use smaller ones to fan around from the top of the foam surface.

STEP 5:

Add a pretty bow and hang it up!

TIP:

I find that these wreaths definitely keep better indoors without heat and humidity. If you want to put one outside, I would definitely wait until the weather cools a bit as this one did not make it very long in the August heat down south. Also, lightly misting the leaves with a spray bottle helps them keep the leaves fresher longer.

If you want more simple projects using items from the dollar store – here are some fun ones for fall. I can’t wait to see what the “My Dollar Store DIY” crew was up to this month! The holidays are just so fun to craft for aren’t they?
