Our Mad Men Meets the South Living Room Update – ORC Week 4

in Lifestyle on 10/27/16

Happy Thursday! Also, known in blog world right now as One Room Challenge Update Day.

This week I am sharing the updates through the 4th week of the challenge. You may have noticed that I didn’t post a Week 3 One Room Challenge update last week. Well, that is because I just didn’t have much to update you on.   Six weeks isn’t a very long time to do a room- and I didn’t really factor the whole traveling thing through before I started. It’s definitely been a busy fall and things are not getting any less hectic! I know once Halloween hits, we might as well all go ahead and say Happy New Year!

So today I will share what I have been up to the past two weeks. While the challenge techically still has two weeks to go, I actually only have 10 sleeps until we leave for Brian’s work trip which means I have to wrap this up a little early. Nothing like a deadline to get motivated!

Thanks again to Linda from Calling it Home and the One Room Challenge to keep me motivated to keep plugging along on this room. Let’s take a quick look at the inspiration for this room.

And here is where we are today…

When I left off last time at Week 2, I was completely stumped on a rug. Like throw-in-the-towel-I-give-up-who-really-needs-a-living-room stumped. It was pretty much consuming me. I was on my phone in bed way too late at night searching every website I could think of. I bought one that was a complete fail. Then, in the most unexpected place (a random trip to ROSS!?!?!) I found this gem for a steal and it is PERFECT. I love how the cream keeps the room feeling bright and the gray adds some fun pattern without being too busy. I ordered several rugs to layer on top of this, but none felt right. So, I think it stays as is!

A couple other big projects have been checked off the list, two of them being my favorite DIY projects ever!

First up, this ottoman. You may remember it when it was dark leather. Y’all. I PAINTED IT. (ok, so this may not be the shock factor that I would expect since by now you know I have tried painting just about everything)

Here is a comparison of the before and after. From dark brown to a light camel. LOVE!

I actually used leather fabric paint and it turned out better than I ever could have expected and is the exact shade I was going for. I pinky-swear promise I will be back with a full tutorial- and the best part is that it was under $15.

My second all time favorite project has to be this DIY art. There are two reasons I heart eyes this one. First- I have been hoarding this massive canvas for approximately 3 years that I picked up for $6 and I am so happy to put it to use.  Second reason? I USED TOOLS TO CONSTRUCT A FRAME. ALL BY MYSELF.

OK, so just a miter box and saw but it was the first time using one. This one was so easy and I think all in I am maybe at $18. Give me all the heart eyes!

Next up, this ottoman. I used some leftover fabric from the dining chairs to construct this one. It involves a no-sew slipcover so basically this is something my 5 year old could do. I haven’t quite finished it yet but I will definitely be back to share how I did this too!

Last but not least, here is a sneak peek of the media console. It is getting a navy refresh using Velvet Finishes paint. I am literally painting it in 15 minute increments whenever I have a little time.  (In other words, the worlds longest project.) So little by little this one is getting crossed off the list.

Alright, so with that, let’s see the status of what we have left to do in the NEXT 10 SLEEPS! I’ve had to eliminate some of my projects since I am just not going to have enough time. But that is the beauty of the ORC. It’s my house so I can certainly keep plugging along to finish the room!

  1. New Rug- DONE!
  2. New Furniture Arrangement- DONE!
  3. Paint Media Cabinet Lacquered Navy- In progress
  4. New Art- DONE!
  5. Zhush up the existing curtains and rods- new trim? painted?- NOT HAPPENING
  6. Paint the Ottoman- DONE!
  7. Lighting- new lamps (already added recessed lighting)- DONE!
  8. Add Console or shelving- In progress

Oh my gosh, I had NO idea there was a paint for leather! I was looking HARD at that picture, and it looks GREAT! That’s so cool. Who makes that stuff? Love your frame…I’m impressed. I’ve never tried using a miter box myself. Now maybe I’ll try it. Just seems like a lot of geometry to me…and I steer clear of that 😉 Looking great. Love the cow print ottoman, too.

Girlfriend!! You’ve been DIY’ing up a storm over there! So impressed! Love the look of the leather ottoman. It IS the perfect shade. And I’m glad that the rug situation is settled. I was worried I was going to have to call in for help over there ha! It’s all looking GREAT!!

I love all your DIY projects, but that ottoman is amazing. I would have never guessed it was painted. Looking forward to the tutorial, might have to give it a try.
