$100 Room Challenge || Kids Lego Nook

in Lifestyle on 09/02/20

Here goes nothing! I have decided to join a fun challenge for the month of September. This challenge is all about taking on one space, and giving it a makeover, in one month’s time, with $100 or less. Yep- you read that right…. $100 BUCKS.  I have participated in this challenge twice before (once for our family den and once in my master closet) and both times it has proven to be successful in getting a space whipped into shape around here.

This time I have decided to turn what was complete “dead space” into a “creation station” for the boys. The room we will be focusing is not really a room, but rather a nook that is between the boys rooms. Think of it a loft area that has been looking for a purpose since the day we moved in to our home over three years ago. Up until very recently, it housed a couch, ottoman and big hutch- none of which was ever really used. Here you can see the space- already with some progress made of turning this into our Kids Creativity Station.

If you’ve been following along this summer, you know I gave Sweet P’s (age 9) bedroom a small makeover and one thing I planned to address was the LEGO EXPLOSION in his room. Wellllllllll…. it turns out the way I dealt with them was to completely remove them from his room! Turns out little brother (now age 6) was ready to get in on the Lego fun and it really no longer made sense to keep them in Big Brother’s room. (We originally kept them exclusively in his room to keep them away from the toddler at the time-but what do you know- these kids keep growing up!) They both love building and playing with Legos- and this area between their rooms is the perfect spot to corral them. While I fully support the Lego habit, I do struggle with keeping them organized. My hope is that by giving them a true space to build it will not only keep things tidier but allow their creativity to explode!

I know they probably won’t be into Legos forever. But why not throw $100 bucks and get this space more functional for them to build and create? While the main focus of this area is on Legos- truly I want this to be considered the creation station where they can build and design and dream to their hearts desire. Neither boy is into arts and crafts (which breaks this mamas heart) but I am also considering housing art supplies here as well…

And I love that we can take a “nook” that once housed unused leftover furniture and turn it into a space for them to use on a daily basis.

So here are some snapshots of how it currently looks. I already removed the furniture that was there and dragged in the Ikea shelf from the playroom and all of the Legos are in here. As you can see from these pictures- it is already getting used.  Now it’s time to make this space work for us!

So for the next couple of weeks I will be working on this space to make it have maximum functionality. I will be using what we have, adding a few new things and just generally giving this space some love to make it functional and of course- have a little style.  My vision is an industrial look with lots of organization and some Legos and Star Wars accessories. All for $100!

Here you can see the inspiration pieces:

Stay tuned and wish me luck!

xoxo-

Heather

I LOVE this idea! As I was reading (before getting to your inspiration/mood board) I was thinking about how I swear I saw Lego blueprints at one point… and there they were in your mood board 🙂 I cannot wait to see how this nook comes together. Good luck! So happy to have you joining the challenge again!

That will be awesome – your boys will love it! Legos are one of the hardest toys to organize, but also one of the few toys that grows with the kids for a long time. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
I’m tackling my teenage daughter’s room for the challenge. The legos were gone a few years ago, but somehow the room clutter still continues 😛

Look forward to seeing this! Legos are such a necessity in a child’s life. I love watching my grandkids create with them.

What a great space you will create for your boys. They will absolutely love it. Plus by your mood board you are going to have a beautiful space to showcase. Love everything you have planned for the room.
