As summer is winding down and our summer road trips are wrapping up, I decided it was time to take a few minutes and restock our family travel emergency kit. The supplies were starting to run low and it was disorganized from using it all summer. I originally created this “kit” a few summers ago by just tossing a bunch of random supplies into a large Ziploc gallon bag to take along on any road trips.
Fast forward several years and I cannot even believe how many times this little goody bag has come in handy for our family on our vacations. After living with the Ziploc gallon bag method, I also decided it was time to upgrade to a more permanent solution and bought a hanging toiletry bag. I searched around on Amazon and this one fit all the requirements:
- Affordable
- Something that could hang in the bathroom or closet (must stay out of the way but be easily accessed)
- Small enough to easily pack in the car
- Compartments to help stay organized
- Hold TONS of stuff!
I landed on this one because it got great reviews and so many reviews said they could stuff tons of stuff in it. Sold!

I also figured that one of the boys could easily take this to an overnight camp someday, which makes this easier to justify as an investment.
This emergency travel kit gets tossed in the car for any road trips we go on and has all kinds of little things we may need while traveling. Obviously, this is not something I pack for a flight, but most of our family travel is by car. Included in the kit are lots of things that we may need while in a rental or on the road.
FAMILY EMERGENCY TRAVEL KIT ITEMS:
- First Aid Kit (I have all of my first aid supplies in the smaller orange bag)

Here is a sampling of some of the items I include, but really so much more than shown here. This bag really does hold TONS and it zips right up to remain compact.
I know many of us are not traveling right now, but this is still something that I think is a great thing to keep on hand and ready for any road trip in the future. Yay for having 6 out of 20 spots organized of my 20 goal in 2020. (Although I guess I need to pick up the pace here!)

1/20 & 2/20: Under Bathroom Cabinets
3/20: Master Closet Winter Purge & Spring Spruce
4/20: Cleaning Locker
5/20: Spice Drawer
6/20: Family Travel Emergency Kit

It is always best to be prepared and hopefully never have a reason to use while away from home! Back in the day when we traveled with our 2 children, I used a small fishing tackle box for items such as those on your list. I highly recommend to travelers to copy your idea.

Fishing tackle box is a great idea too! I agree- you hope to never need it, but it’s so nice to have on hand if you do!
