Southern State of Mind Blog by Heather

DIY Southern Sayings Wine Charms (from Scrabble Tiles!)

in entertain, Lifestyle on 02/24/16

As I mentioned last month, we started a Southern State of Mind Happy Hour series this year. In January, I shared our Moscow Mule recipe and for February’s Happy Hour post I decided to do a fun happy hour craft instead. Hey, my blog, my rules mmmm-kay? 🙂

Now, before we get started, I promise I am not stalking Reese Witherspoon and her Draper James store. Although with a second post inspired by her in less than a month I admit it may seem a little strange. You see, a few months back I spotted these cute monogrammed Southern Sayings cocktail napkins that she carried at her store. I filed them away under “cute, but costly” and went on my merry way.

Well, it’s funny how those little tid-bits I file away can stew and create a life of their own, because the next thing I knew, I was determined to make cute wine glass charms inspired by those cute Southern sayings.  Today I am going to share how I did it!

STEP 1: For these Scrabble Tiles Southern Wine Charms, I first gathered my supplies.  Now, I have an extra Scrabble game I picked up along the way for crafts but if you don’t have one, you can actually order them online! Who knew!? I just grabbed four tiles and gave them a quick coat of white spray paint.

Supplies:

  • Scrabble Tiles
  • Drill
  • 5/64 Drill Bit
  • 0.75″ x 0.75″ printed sayings
  • mod podge & foam brush
  • White spray paint
  • Twine, floral wire, etc to attach to stem

STEP 2: Then I went to my computer and made the Southern Sayings printables using Picmonkey. Now, if you want to use the same sayings I did, you can download them here. But, if you want to use this method to make other versions, here is how I did it:

  • Scrabble tiles are 0.75″ x 0.75″ square. I went into Picmonkey (free!) and used the “DESIGN” method using a blank square canvas.
  • Then I just used the text tool to type out my sayings. Once I liked the way they looked, I saved them.
  • Then I opened Power Point and inserted the saved images into the slide. From there, I reduced the size to 0.75″ x 0.75″ and added a light gray box around them so that I would have a guideline to cut them once they were printed.
  • Note: If I were going to do them again, I would leave a little more space on top to accommodate the drilled hole.                                                     IMG_5632

STEP 3: So, now we have our painted tiles and printed sayings. The next step is drilling a hole on the top of the tiles.

Sidenote: I was pretty stoked when Rockwell sent me my very own drill. Y’all, I have never had my very own drill and this made doing this craft so easy. The drill HAS IT’S OWN LIGHT and two battery packs. I feel like I could literally build a house with it. Or at least a Tiny House.  You know I am still working on my building skills but this thing really makes me feel like I should be wearing a tool belt and drawing out house plans. But for now, I will start with Scrabble tiles, ha.  I plan on keeping this bad boy in my cloffice so no one else can get their hands on it.

OK, back to the wine charms. I used a 5/64 drill bit in my new Rockwell drill to give the tiles a little hole on the top.

STEP 4: Once I had the holes drilled, I used mod-podge to glue the printed Southern Sayings onto the tiles then gave them several coats to coat them. Then I just went through the holes again with the drill. It would have probably worked to glue the paper on first and then drill the holes, but I didn’t do it that way…

STEP 5: Once the wine charms were ready, I used some twine I had on hand to attach them to the wine stems.

Wouldn’t these Scrabble Tiles Southern Wine Charms be so cute for a bridal shower? Or you could even leave the Scrabble tiles as-is if you are having a dinner party and make one for everyone’s initial. Of course, you could use this method and print just about anything you can dream up! Hey, wine-not?

It’s hard to read, but the others say “Top Me Off” and “Tell Me Something Good.”

That is just a darling idea! Will definitely have to try these out. I love working with power tools myself, even though I sometimes think I’ll slip and draw back a nub for a finger. But in the end the fright is always worth it for the results. 🙂

Ha. I am far from being able to build something, but baby steps right?! Seriously though, this drill made me feel like I could actually tackle a big project.
