Last week I officially kicked off Christmas around here and I must admit that the Christmas tubs all came out yesterday. Decorating the new house is super fun, but definitely a challenge to figure out! Over the next couple of weeks I will be sharing some fun Christmas crafts, DIYs, Home Tours, Style Favorites and Gift Guides chock ful of holiday cheer.
And today I am sharing a fun DIY Keepsake Ornament idea. This one is super easy and inexpensive! AND I am also partnering with lots of other creative bloggers to share their DIY Ornaments below- I am excited to see what everyone came up with!
This year I knew I wanted some keepsake ornaments of the little guys… and our sweet pup. So I came up with this Dollar Store Metal Tray Silhouette Ornament.
I haven’t shared this on the blog yet because this blog is my happy place and this is sad news so let me go ahead and get this off my chest. We had to say goodbye to our sweet Bella Bean a few weeks ago. For those of you that don’t know, Bella was our loyal Chocolate Lab and my sacred gal pal around here. She was 13.5 years old and was our first “child” that we have had basically our entire marriage. She had a wonderful life and we are at peace with all of it but it still triggers lots of emotions for me.
So, between that and having babies – ahem- I mean big boys- that are growing at the speed of light- I knew I wanted a way to see their sweet little faces on the tree this year. Doesn’t Christmas just bring out all of the feels?
I followed the same method these ornaments as I did for for creating silhouettes that I outlined in this post. It’s truly the slacker girls way of creating silhouettes and SUPER INEXPENSIVE!
Here’s a quick run down- for my silhouettes I actually print photos of the silhouettes and then just cut the profile out and paint them directly with black paint. It’s easy peasy y’all. (there are step by step directions in this post)
For these trays, I just painted the interior of them with an off-white acrylic paint. Once the paint was dry, I used matte Modge Podge to glue them onto the tray. Then after those were attached, I went over them several times to give it a solid coat.
To hang them, I used my hot glue gun to attach some ribbon and voila!
I am glad I was able to come up with a little tribute to our sweet girl this Christmas. She will forever be in our hearts. I hope you are inspired to create a keepsake ornament this year with your precious ones! And for lots of good DIY Christmas ornament inspiration- check out what some of my friends have been up to below:

So sorry to hear about your dog. It’s so hard to say good bye to them, isn’t it? Anyway, I think these are a fab way to keep her memory alive. So cute!
