What a year this week has been! I know we are all still processing our current situation and I am just trying to take it all day by day, and mostly just hour by hour around here. We started our homeschooling and overall it has been going as well as can be expected. I am so appreciative of both boy’s teachers pouring themselves into their students all week. And I think for all of the moms who suddenly had to become a home school teacher- we all deserve to feel great about making it through week one.
I am embarrassed to admit how many times I sat down to write this post this week and found myself on another news site, reading a text, or perusing Facebook! I have had a really hard time focusing and organizing my thoughts this week but still wanted to check in with you here because I love this time we get to virtually connect and catch up. So grab a coffee and meet me on the porch, it’s time for our weekly Front Porch Coffee Talk!
This week, the boys joined me on the porch. 🙂 Because, well, what else did they have to do?
A SOCIALLY DISTANT 40th BIRTHDAY
Yep, I celebrated the big 4-0 on Monday! And while I had been mentally preparing for that day for months, nothing could have prepared me for the reality of what it actually turned out like. Both boys were home from school, our trip to Palmetto Bluff cancelled, and friends doing drive-by birthday wishes from their cars. I know everyone dealt with major disappointments this week and my heart just breaks for the graduating class of 2020. The last few months of my senior year of high school are truly forever etched in my memory.
MY NEW FAVORITE THING: ZOOM VIDEO CALLS
While we are all social distancing- in some ways I feel more connected to friends than ever before! I have had so many calls with friends just to see how they are doing, the group texts have been off the chain, and I had several video conference calls this week just for fun! If you haven’t yet downloaded and used the ZOOM app- I highly recommend it!
NEIGHBORHOOD FUN
I have never been more thankful for my neighbors! As I sit on my front porch, the amount of people out and about taking walks is so awesome to see. It’s like a NYC sidewalk in front of my house (of course, everyone is keeping their distance!) But in the three years we have lived here, I have never seen so many families taking walks and riding their bikes as I have in the past week.
The moms in our neighborhood also organized a Shamrock Hunt- and we went on a walk to find shamrocks in everyone’s windows. Such a fun idea and we counted 26 before we found the creek and got completely sidetracked. We are going to try to do this at least once a week with different pictures in the window.
The ladies in my neighborhood also did a book exchange and it was fun to put a few books in my mailbox to be picked up and I grabbed one from a friend as well. This one was on my to-be-read list! I had big plans to read this week… but as I mentioned apparently I haven’t been able to focus on much this week so hoping to read more next week.
LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE
One thing I know is that even in the most anxious of times, laughter has helped to keep me sane this week. And while what we are dealing with is not funny AT ALL, can we just all agree that the memes floating around are HYSTERICAL? It has provided such relief for me. I have seen lots of good ones, but these were my faves this week:

Hang in there! I appreciate your column and how difficult it is to put it together at a time like this. I also agree that keeping things as normal as possible is very important. My kids are grown so I don’t need to home school but kudos to all the teachers and parents out there doing all they can to educate the kids. I wish you all the best and enjoy your time with your family!
