I have been coveting this clam shell from Ballard Designs for years but could never pull the trigger on purchasing it. There were even a couple times I almost bought one from the outlet here in Atlanta, but still couldn’t allow myself to shell out the discounted price, especially because they were chipped or damaged.
A few months back (think late summer!!!), I came across this plastic clam shell at the thrift store for about $3. Sometimes I wonder why I wait so long to do projects, because transforming this took all of 15 minutes. But after about 6 months down in my craft cave, I pulled it out last week and got to work turning this into a Ballard Giant Clam Shell Knock Off.
This was super simple and I absolutely love the way it turned out!
First step:
I gave it a coat of Rustoleum Heirloom White. (Any base white coat will do. The stone spray paint (step #2 below) does not have full coverage, so you need to cover the original color first).
Second step:
Give it a coat of Rustoleum Stone Spray to give it the texture and color variation to make it feel more real.
Third Step:
Make it a planter.
I have always loved the orchid styled in these clams, so I grabbed one at Trader Joe’s for around $8. I just stuck the whole vase in the clam. Of course, this doesn’t have to be a planter… it could be a bowl, a cute drink holder, mail collector…
Fourth Step:
Fill in clam around the vase.
To fill the clam around the orchid vase, I layered in some river rock and oyster shells. (And yes, this is project #462 that I have used with oyster shells!) Then I just piled some dollar tree moss around it and grabbed some vines from the yard to make it feel more natural.
I love the organic feel it has now. And for around $10 I think it will make a great spring and summer centerpiece on our island and dining table.
Yay for repurposing!
xoxo,
Heather
