{Her} Master Closet Update (part 1)

in Lifestyle on 02/05/15

Happy Thursday to you!

I sure hope you are staying warm…and healthy. My crew has been sick this week, the baby with a cold and the little guy with a stomach bug. Ahhh, spring and less germs, you can’t get here soon enough!

Today I am here with an update on a mini-makeover I started before we went out of town. The master closet was on the top of the list of projects to tackle this year. When you see the before pictures below you will understand why! Husband had to travel for the week so I knew it would be a great time to start.

And by start, I mean I took every single thing out and started from scratch. I knew it was going to be painful, but it was the only way to really make myself PURGE and rethink the tiny space to make it work best for me.  Along the way, I added a few simple touches to help make the space feel more like a chic boutique. Figured just because the closet is tiny doesn’t mean it can’t work hard and be somewhat chic!

how to add boutique touches to master closet

OK, ready? Want to see why it was going to be so painful? Yep, here are the befores, I am warning you now, it ain’t pretty!

This is five years of haphazard nonsense in the making.

My eyes, my eyes! No wonder I was pretty much having an anxiety attack trying to get dressed every morning! Once everything was out, here is what I was left to work with:

The first thing I did was give it a fresh coat of light pink paint- Benjamin Moore Wild Aster. I painted all the walls and even the ceiling and love the subtle feminine touch it added.

Once the walls were painted, I started working on the configuration that would work best. I grabbed random storage odds and ends from different places in the house until I found the best plan using what was around the house. This rug was previously in the kitchen and thought it really kicked up the boutique feel. Makes the tiny little closet feel a little more luxurious.

Once I had the general layout of the closet decided, I began the task of sorting through what was going back in. I removed over half of what was originally in here.

This was painful but freeing!

Some things were donated or consigned, maternity clothes were passed on to the next expecting mother, and items that I didn’t wear very often were moved into tubs in the attic.

Then I realized I was a leopard shoe hoarder, but that my friends is a different post for a different day. #issues

You know what? The reason my closet wasn’t working and would NEVER work before is because I didn’t have a designated space for everything.
AKA- too much stuff for too little space.
You may be saying to yourself – DUH Heather!! This may seem like such an obvious statement. But until you actually admit it and decide to do something, it will constantly be a battle. Now that I have edited this space down, I am committed to be more picky about what makes is way back in.
In addition to the paint, I purchased some new cute baskets for the top shelf and some thin felt hangers. I still plan to paint all of the misfit furniture so that it looks more high end, and maybe even paint the closet door a fun color. I am also on the lookout for a light fixture- right now it’s a light bulb.
Little chic boutique closet here we come!
I hope my before pictures didn’t scare you too bad. I will be back tomorrow with the afters!
xoxo-
Heather

Can't wait to see the "after." And if you happen to wear a 7.5 or 8, I'll be in Atlanta in a few weeks and can take those leopard shoes off your hands!
