Whoa, hello there Thursday how did you get here so fast? Are you as guilty as me staying up late watching the Olympics this week? I just LOVE it! We only have two official weeks left of summer until both boys are in pre-school and we are still soaking up every minute of no schedules, packing lunches and carpool lines. I am however, looking forward to getting my house back in one piece after what we will call “Hurricane Summer” and have some fun house projects to share soon!

Today I am sharing an easy craft tutorial for a unique baseball cap.

Do you ever see something and you are immediately smitten? That is what happened when I first spotted an Aviate Baseball Cap. If you haven’t seen an Aviate baseball cap, it’s only a matter of time because now that I have spotted them I am seeing them everywhere. (I’ve even spotted the Olympic teams wearing something similar with USA on them!) They are a really simple idea: a hat with city airport codes plastered across them. I love how they are simple yet they make a fun statement. And I recently professed my love of baseball caps so this little crush should come as no surprise.

So, what does a girl do when she is smitten? Get her hands on one! I went looking to buy one and sadly they were sold out of my hometown ATL. Whomp, whomp, whomp. So, I did what any normal DIY-er does- decided it would make a pretty stellar DIY project and got to work.

It was pretty simple and requires very little sewing skills. That said, you do need to be able to hand stitch for this project.

DIY AVIATE BASEBALL CAP TUTORIAL

TOOLS & MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THIS DIY AVIATE BASEBALL CAP PROJECT:

Baseball Cap
White Felt
Needle & White Thread
Paper/Computer for Stencil

STEPS TO FOLLOW FOR THIS DIY AVIATE BASEBALL CAP PROJECT:

STEP 1:

Find a solid color hat in any color. I went with this red one because I wanted something that would pop. Of course, I also ordered a NAVY one because #navyismylovelanguage and I have something else planned for it. These hats are not “weathered” as much as I had hoped, but I guess that will be my job to wear them in. And they are $6, so there is that.

STEP 2:

Pick your city… and then get it’s airport code. I chose Atlanta===> ATL.

Admittedly, this whole Aviate concept works really well for the A-T-L. When I was chatting with my cousin about making one for her city of Chicago, we agreed that ORD (O’Hare) and MDW (Midway) don’t really have the same ring to them. But CLT (Charlotte), Birmingham (BHM) and DAL (Dallas) are on point. CHS (Charleston) and JAX (Jacksonville)? Yes. Orlando (MCO) Um, not so much.

Step 3:

Dig through all of your craft drawers, tubs and baskets until you find some white felt. Then, open Word in Microsoft and create your pattern to cut out from the felt. I have so lovingly included my ATL (CLICK HERE) template as a free download. If you want to create your own pattern with different letters, I used the font ARIAL NARROW in 225 size (Tip- clear the text fill so you don’t waste ink when printing)

STEP 4:

Cut out the letters and pin them onto the felt. Then, ever so carefully, cut out your letters.

STEP 5:

Now you have your letters ready to go. Pin the letters onto the hat where you want them to go. Then started stitching them in place.

STEP 6:

You are done! Now lay out random outfits on the dining room table that look cute with your new Aviate baseball cap. Take me out to the ballgame…

Alright, I’m dying to know- would your airport code work for this project? I am pretty excited that the new Braves stadium will be opening right down the road from us next spring and I will be ready with my ATL hat!
